I'm not kidding. You know what I mean. Seems like every video carries an ad now, some of which like that stupid Beats selfie thing are unskippable. Time was you could just hit refresh on the browser once or twice and get to the video but now it's taking a dozen or more attempts for that to work.

The new one I've noticed is if you have a video queued up and the whole thing has buffered (i.e. whole play bar is grey) but you don't play the video for a few hours, when you come back to it and play it often goes about thirty second through... then decides to interrupt the video with another advert or two before reloading the same clip from scratch. To me this is just stupid, and makes me lament the fact that the XBMC/Kodi YouTube plugin keeps breaking because it can sometimes play all the videos including Vevo etc ones with no ads whatsoever, the way it should be.

It is a bit daft.

I wonder if sooner or later another video website will top them. A bit like facebook overtook myspace.

I've been browsing Vimeo a lot recently. I realised I only ever used youtube to watch trashy things and the odd 'People are awesome' video. And now I'm in China so youtube is blocked. My life hasn't changed, surprise surprise, but I very recently discovered Vimeo works, and it's all top quality stuff on there. Some art fag stuff too, but mostly it's good to watch. As far as I can tell, the adverts are just page banners too. Nothing in the videos. They get their money from skilled film-makers paying for subscriptions to use the site as a broadcasting platform.

TL;DR - youtube is mostly trash and ruined by adverts. Vimeo is top quality, maybe more niche material at times though. I know which one I prefer now for random time-wasting (as that's all I really use video sites for anyway...)

Hi

One I found on Youtube last week was a long video which had multiple adverts in it. It was a video of an album and the adds were between some of the tracks.

All the best

I'm sure some other service will challenge it, but not because of advertising...

Youtube is not profitable:

A $4 billion 'break even' business is a hard market for anyone to enter. Either adverts increase or the business model changes...

Apparently a new site (vessel, I think) has been poaching some of the big youtube stars away offering them 5-6 figure deals for exclusive content. Then charging a subscription.Might be the way Youtube goes as well. I've read that youtube make about 45% from all the ad revenue but the big youtubers make lots of money on top from product placement which youtube hasn't really been able to get a cut of.

A big youtube fashion vlogger (I'd never heard of her) did a book launch in Norwich on saturday. I saw the queue and thought it was for some kind of big popstar or something, its pretty crazy how much of a following some of the big channels have

You should demand a refund?

Never forget. You are the product, not the customer.

I thought I was on your ignore list?

Yeah I used to use that and in fact almost every version of Firefox I install including on my work machine has adblockers and other anti-malware, but I'm using Safari with basically stock settings most of the time.

If I click on a video and it try's to play an ad, I navigate away on principal, it's 2015 I shouldn't have to watch ads for shampoo anymore ever. Either charge me a subscription or fuck off. Or maybe a tariff like 1p per vid exceeding 30secs in length or something.

Also recently it's been showing me ads for stocks and shares apps? Bit of a strange thing to advertise on a platform mainly used by kids.

I think the ads will be targeted to the viewer. Not sure how but could be watch history or google search history. Maybe just age, location ect if you're logged in.
