Loads of people do it. One guy I know was doing his CBT with a 51 yr old woman a couple of weeks ago.

A couple of years back someone posted stats of age groups passing their bike test and there were some in their 80's Smile

When I did my CBT only one person was below 20. The other 3 ranged from early 30s to late 40s.

My friends dad got into biking when he was 50.

Are the CBT instructors usually old blokes?

Yes, you're overthinking this, Stop Thinking - Start Ridi... No, just no.
I may have equivalent grammatical sense, but I will not become Teflon-Tim.

I did mine before going on to do das and it was a mix of ages.
Dont underestimate how much years of driving a car will stand to you.
Once you can master the basics of handling the geared bike the rest will be easier...

Go for it! Thumbs Up

Here are the stats for 2013-2014:

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/drt04-practical-motor-cycle-test-pass-rates

It shows that at least 7,719 people over 45 took their mod2 in that year and at least 5123 gained a full license.

Did you older lads knock about on a 125 with L plates for a while or go straight for the full licence?

I came back to biking at 41 after a 20 year break.
It's never too late to start. Life is fleeting. Make the most of it.

Yes, 44
Bertie_ wrote:

Depends if there's a bunch of 17yr olds doing the CBT...
When I did mine, there was the token cocky pedboi (who had trouble putting his brother's scooterped on its centre stand...) and another guy in his late 20's renewing his certificate.
So...as long as you pay attention to what the instructor tells you, the 17yr olds will be the ones looking daft! Smile

I did 7 years on CBT.....mainly through lazyness. Small bikes look silly and are slow, I'm 6ft2 and getting on for 17 stone. Looked utterly ridiculous on a small YBR. Doubled down on the clown outfit by wearing hiviz everywhere and giant white helmet.

So what. People laugh at you, yes, because it is ridiculous and funny.

If it will bother you, get a DAS sorted. You still have to do a CBT anyway.

CBT is one of the cheapest training sessions you'll have. Lots of information, lots of access to rider knowledge. Worth every penny.
Get recommendations on rider schools though!

Same height as me. Been looking at loads of bikes and a Varadero seems to be the only option.

If you've got the cash for DAS, then don't mess around on a 125 - it'll just cost you time and hassle buying it and selling it on again. Go for a full license, then you'll have tried a 125 and a 600 at the training school and know what you're happy on.

Even Mrs Bamt (who thought a 125 was scarily fast and she'd want nothing faster) was fed up with it after a few weeks and went on and got a proper license and proper bike (well, a Bandit 600S, but it's close enough...).

I'm of similar age to you, I've always cycled but went and got a bike license just over a year ago. 29,000 miles under my belt now - went straight for an XJ900S (Diversion 900) and don't regret it at all. Riding around on the 125 that Mrs Bamt bought last summer was fun, but I'd have hated it if it was my only machine.

My record is 62. I done a CBT for a 62 year old man.

Ollies record is 73 years old

Garys oldest CBT re qualification was 91 years old. A little old lady of 91 still riding around on a moped.

So are you too old? Go have a go and find out!

Plenty of people say good things about the Varadero, it seems to be the best quality 125 money can buy.

But if you already drive and if saving money on transport isn't the deciding factor then many people would say don't bother buying a 125. Get yourself on a course, get the whole thing done and dusted in something like 5 days (some take less, some more).

You have to do the CBT anyway, it's good training, and gives you a chance to figure out if it's something you like before committing more money. See what you think, see what the instructor thinks.
Have fun! Smile

Laughing

No, you're never too old Smile - I started at 45. CBT in the June was with a 24 year old guy and an 18 year old girl - loved it (see this thread) Very Happy, bought a 125 in the July, commuted to work on it. Took my tests in the September (DAS course).

The only thing you'll regret is that you didn't do it earlier in life.

*edit to fix CBT month, forgetful as I am .. must be my age

My pop sat his CBT last year at the tender age of 67. Now he's the proud owner of a CG125, a 1955 AJS 350 and a Triumph tiger cub. Granted he can't ride the last two until he passes A2/DAS but plans to grab a few lessons and sit his test when the weather gets a bit better.

Dinnie be daft. And even if you did why do you care? A few hours pootling about together, then the world is your two-wheeled playground Thumbs Up

Delay no longer - just go for it. I regret waiting until I was in my thirties to get into biking.
