Usually VNC servers on Android devices require root access. VMLite VNC Server purports to not need that as long as you start a server by hooking your device up to a laptop or similar and running an app to launch it when connected by USB. Then you can unhook it and run the app... in theory.

As I can't currently get root access on my particular Fire TV (firmware is too new and hasn't been exploited yet) this appears to be the only option. I paid for VMLite VNC Server from the app store and it seems to launch just fine on my HTC One M8, which is running stock version of Android but is unlocked/rooted. Remote control of the HTC One M8 is possible via RealVNC on my MacBook Air and presumably anything else I have with a VNC client so I know the app can work, at least.

Problem is, when the APK is side loaded to the Fire TV it runs but doesn't pass the authentication license check. I'm putting this down to the fact that although I have a version of Google Play services running underneath including the Play Store, you can't actually download anything directly because it doesn't find the server. Again, lack of root access is a real problem here.

Any suggestions?

TL;DR I would like to get a remotely accessible VNC server on this Fire TV without root access, can it be done or should I give up for now and refund the app?
