I'm getting a brand new bike next week friday. So far i had some great feedback, suggestions and recommendations from people on this forum. Most of them told me not to get a brand new one on finance, but let's leave that. Also I'll get full Comprehensive insurance, so let's not talk about insurance either Very Happy

The question here is, what are the best chains, locks, disc brakes and alarms or anything else.
I was thinking a mixture of a good chain and META alarm, I have ordered the alarm, thinking I could just fit it in myself but then someone on forum wrote that it's basically impossible for a neewbie, so taking that advice into account I canceled the order and I think I'm gonna get it fitted in a proper garage.

So what do you recommend, I'd like a mixture of things, so the thief will have to have time patience and be good to actually steal my brand new beauty.

Hired goons standing by it 24/7.

Almax chains seem to be the thing to have. Alarms are a bit snake oil people ignore them so it's only really any good if you are nearby with a baseball bat. I don't doubt you could fit an alarm (your ped thread shows you have no shortage of enthusiasm to try things) but many insurers are not interested in it as a security device unless fitted by an approved installer.

Trackers on eBay don't cost the earth, if concealed well enough you may then be able to find it after it's stolen.

All the chains and alarms in the world don't help if they pick it up and toss it in a van so it needs to be chained to something permanent..... even this won't stop power tools though.... which brings us too GAP insurance so if shit happens the shortfall on the insurance payout to the finance parasites is covered.

It might have been mentioned already, but...

If you declare eleventy beellion locks and such on your insurance "to get the price down", then you must ALWAYS use ALL of them. If you don't, no payout........

Have you actually verified if the lockage affects the insurance premium? In my case, if I tell the insurance company I use a lock, the premium goes up. I tried it, if I have an 'approved' chain and lock it puts my premium up by 5 ponds to £78/year.

Insurance company - "Does the bike have any security?"
Me - "Yes, it has an ignition key. Sometimes, I remember to not leave it in the ignition."

Get a 16mm or 19mm Almax or Pragmasis chain and a proper padlock, add a generic disclock to the proper chain and padlock. When it comes to insurance parasites and security I declare nothing and use something.

I've got a 19mm Almax, haven't used it away from home, but when I do, I'm sure my bike would be fine... I hope...

I've used an Abus Granite lock and chain for the last 20 odd years. Can't complain.

This through the frame.

...a 19mm chain
...and this on the end.

Multiply the above as budget/neurosis allows.
Then sleep at the window 2ft from the bike at all times and (to coin a BCF term) pray the thief isn't an internet 'sperg who can lockpick. Shifty

Any lock can be picked, most chains on the market can be cropped by man muscle (hah!) and if they wanted your bike enough they might just lift the concrete around it.
Shitty time to be a biker huh, pleasant dreams. Sleeping

I naively declared an unspecified security device.
Where do I stand if it actually get's nicked then? Would I most likely have to produce a receipt for some sort of lock that was of an 'approved' sort?
Or just say 'Yah, it was locked, innit. Dem BadMan took lock an' all, innit.' ?
