just wondering how many of u ride with lights on or off in day time??
i personally ride without them on as ive been told by quite a few people that lights on in day time makes drivers underestimate speed and distance..
ive found i have had more people pull out on me when i used to ride with my lights on were as now they wait

I don't think it makes people misjudge distances if you have your lights on as in Denmark you have to have your lights on at ALL times by law.

People's perception of your speed of approach is by their brain's assement of the growth of the shape compared to the background.

Headlights distort this image.

The reason for daytime headlights is that it gives brain-dead car drivers a bit more of a clue that something is heading towards them.

Cheers,

Byrnie.

On. And often if I'm approaching a junction on a fairly fast road and there's someone waiting to turn out (in either direction) I quickly toot my horn too, just to try & make sure they've seen me.

What I really want is my own personal illuminated neon sign, about 4 feet above my head, with an arrow pointing down and the words "bike here" in bold capitals..... Laughing

I don't have mine on in daytime when the weather is clear and hot like today, but even slightly overcast and I do.
On my 125 I had them on all the time, through no choice of my own, but my examiner said it was his policy to ask all riders who did their test with him to have lights on.

I ride with my headlights on all the time, just down to personal preference I spose.

But I was always told it increases the chance of a car driver spotting you.

Also I don't tend to think about my lights any more as the switch is always on.

Also I have heard they were going to make day time running lights compulsory (like they have in sweden, hence why Volvo's have them) in the EU, also some bikes come without the headlight switch now too!

I was told at the CBT last year that you should always drive with your headlights on. Never told us why though Confused

I always ride with them on.

I thought that the Highway Code recommends it.

Although I have failed to find my highway code book. Rolling Eyes

Hi

Leave mine on pretty much all the time.

Yes it does make you more visable, and yes there is plenty of evidence that it does screw up peoples perception of your speed. However it is recommended in the highway code and I would rather not give an insurance company any excuse to try and avoid paying out.

All the best

Keith

To turn mine on I have to lock the steering, guessing his bike is different, or he likes going round in circles Laughing Rolling Eyes

Two of my bikes are not designed to have the lights on all the time, the battery would go flat.

I have one of those really annoying polychromic projector fog lamps (with a lower wattage bulb in) for a position light on my other one. It irritates people (they certainly annoy me), my thinking is that people see it and go "what a bloody annoying headlamp on that bike", mission accomplished, I have now been seen and taken note of. A few electrics problems (mainly a battery which could do with replacing) means i occasionally turn them off to have the benefit of flashing indicators, but most of the time the indicators are fine so the light stays on. Definitely when its overcast, sometimes off in bright sunlight.

So long as it cuts down on the looked but did not see accidents I'd always recommend it. One of my brothers and one of my friends have both been pulled out into by drivers who looked straight at them but pulled out nonetheless, and claimed not to see them. In both those accidents, they didn't have their lights on.

I think I'd rather be seen and have my speed underestimated than not seen at all myself.

I`ve always ridden with my lights on.

I`d get a giant chicken outfit with flashing lights on if I thought it would make some people see me!

I did, they still didn`t......... Laughing

And another thing.

Are wing/rear view mirrors an optional extra on some cars?

Because nobody uses them..........
