As per the title.

Is there any point running anti virus on android phones and tablets or does it just slow the whole thing down?

Strikes me as snake oil tbh.

Don't root the handset and avoid dodgy app stores and I suspect you'll be fine.

If the handset's rooted and you're using suspect apps then I highly doubt the anti virus can actually do anything about the inevitable.

Viruses aren't really the problem, it's mailware and badly coded apps.

Google needs to make it so the apps are sandboxed and only the permissions and access you allow it to use, not what the app says it needs.

I've installed Malwarebytes. It has no impact on phone performance. It's never detected anything, but seeing as it's a works phone and I do connect to our systems with it, It's nice to think I've covered my back legalistically should the worst happen.

I have Kaspersky on my Galaxy Note3. It hasn't detected anything yet.
It doesn't slow my phone.
-It checks apps if it's safe when it's installed.
-It scans when I push scan button.
-It has some functions for when it's stolen, but I don't use it.
I think it's not that beneficial as PC one and I feel it's function is very limited. (But better than nothing)
My pack could be used for three any PC/tablet/phone mix, so I use them for two PCs and one phone.
p.s. I installed it when as android 4.3, then upgraded my phone to 4.4.
It was so troublesome to uninstall and re-install it cause I couldn't access Kaspersky with 4.4 to enable to uninstall it. I had to do several Q&A tennis with Kaspersky forum to solve this. Sick So next time I will be super careful to uninstall application first, upgrade android, then re-install application.
