But how do they make complete bikes so cheap these days with good main components? By using stupid old standards for parts you don't even think about of course!

After a year of abuse and zero maintenance other than a bit of chain oil every now and then the freewheel on my dirt jump bike is giving up.

I wouldn't have thought this would have been too much of a problem as I am quite happy to just replace it with something decent. A bit of digging however reveals that my singlespeed hub has the ancient metric BMX 30x1mm thread standard. This is annoying as the only replacements I can find that aren't retro BMX freewheels that will break after 5 seconds of hard use are the freewheel I already have and a slightly cheaper one that seems to be almost the same. A replacement is only €17 (plus special tool obviously...) but I really want to upgrade to something decent, hard wearing and that clicks really loudly (tart factor!).

So to my question - is there any way I can run a BSA/ISO standard sized freewheel on my 30x1mm hub without actually replacing the hub? I don't want to replace my rear wheel as the rim is fine and the wheel is good and strong and light enough for me. Having a new hub built on to my current rim is going to be about as much as a new wheel when you factor in the labour to build the wheel (I don't want to do it myself) so that's not really an option either.

It seems pretty stupid to have used this freewheel standard and it's annoyed me quite a bit! I don't really want to replace like for like but so far it's looking like that's my only option. Sheldon Brown isn't throwing anything up about conversions either unless I'm missing something obvious.

I spent about two hours last night looking for exactly that (except I didn't know it existed!). I even had a look on some trials websites as I used to have a little mod trials bike with a freewheel at the crank! My google-fu is weak Embarassed

Very helpful, thanks Thumbs Up
