There's no further info yet, only speculations. They say Moto Guzzi made one of these back in the 1982, it was called W103.

What are the pros?

It looks overly complicated to me.

It says BMW has a patent on this, no where does it say this is a new patient.

From the hand drawn diagrams, I'd guess this has been dragged up from the archives.

Patents are (normally) only valid for 20 to 30 years from the date of filing, so this one has probably expired a while ago

20 years is the number and you've got to pay for each year to keep the protection. Thumbs Up

Wow, I did not know about the maintenance fees!

Considering it's a system created to protect the common man against having their ideas replicated by large corporations the size and nature of the fees are somewhat ridiculous!

That made me LOL so hard the lion bar I was eating is now stuck to my screen.

Everyone knows it's a system for large corporations to troll each other with.

That's the R 1200C, you could even see it in one of the Brosnan's James Bond movies. Thumbs Up

Yes, plus the patent protection is only enforceable in the countries where you applied for the protection. Each registration cost money + maintenance fees.

If you register your invention in the UK, the protection only affects the UK territory. Meaning, I could easily take your invention and use it for my business in Czech rep. and you could say nothing. If you then decide to go and get the protection in the CZE, it won't affect me, because I've been using it before you applied for the Czech patent protection. The UK will defend its citizen, so they won't let me sell my products using your invention in the UK, but I would have the rest of this planet to make business on.

You could also apply for the protection at European Patent Office, to get the EU protection. But then, anyone that's based out of the EU could do the same thing, as I could in the example above.

EU aspect - In the EU we want to have the common market. If you have an unique invention and are going to use it in production, you shall not use it against other EU undertakings. If they ask you, you shall provide them the invention, for a fee of course. You can't just use your invention as a business advantage.

If you dig around you could probably find any number of strange and unusual combustion engine configurations. Theres probably very little that's actually new.
