Need to upgrade as the Carerra TDF 2014 is a year old. Running out of gears with the 7 speed 14-28 on rear. Bike will now be used as winter commuter / indoor trainer.

Cycle to work scheme will be getting used again.

Looking to spend £450 - £500 max.

Had a look at this in Decathlon.

Any good other ones folk can recommend I look at ?

That Decathlon is pretty incredible value but the compromises are being made in the frame and those slightly off the norm crank arm lengths imo.

I'd instead look at a boardman or the like if you want something to tinker with and perhaps upgrade down the line. Otherwise if you want to just keep it as it is right out of the box, that Decathlon is just about unbeatable.

Build it yourself. I've been doing this for years. New bicycles are expensive and you don't get the best kit and you have to make compromises. Good frames but running gear is pants and the other way around.

Boardmans are not as good as they used to be, frames are heavier and the running gear is worse. They are just selling on a name.

Second hand parts are everywhere and don't command anywhere near the money. Take your time and shop around then you get exactly what you want.

My old 98 Peugeot was 7 speed, it now runs a 9 speed with no problem at a closer ratio as Norfolk is flat.

I built another bike that would cost at least £2500 off the peg for £850 and that includes Mavic cosmic deep rims on tubulars.
That's running full Campagnolo and a host of other expensive brand names.

It's not hard to do.

I'm gonna be getting it through cycle to work scheme so building it maself is a no.

Will pop into Evans in the city and have a look.

Tho I do like the Decathlon one. I will not be changing stuff to upgrade it. Just riding it.

Bit over budget but worthwhile imo, take a look at one of these:

Look at the clearance bikes on the Evans website as generally a £700 2014 model discounted to £500 will be a better bike than a £500 non-discounted 2015 model.

I couldn't find anything I fancied though, so added £300 to my companies £1000 max and bought a Cannondale CAAD10 with Shimano 105 groupset - it's a lovely bike to ride Cool

That is what I'm looking at.

I can't afford to put money down. Got family holiday to pay for next month.
Hence not buying on Gumtree etc.

problem is that you won't get much more than Claris or Sora (8 speed) for your budget, so not really worth upgrading for.

I have a Norco Valence (£450, carbon forks, internal cables), but changing to a 105 groupset.
