Not suprised and can't see it getting any better.

The 'renting for life' is going to become more and more common.

They consider you 'rich' if you have £10,000 in savings?

"If I had just five more pounds I'd be rich" thought every person ever.

Id consider myself rich if I had £10k in savings. Of course if I actually had 10k saved up I'm sure I wouldn't consider myself rich until I'd saved 50k.

Such is life.

I've got 5 figure savings, does that make me rich?

What about next year when I have fuck all in savings and a mortage? Will I still be rich?

This. Once my deposit is taken I will be technically penniless.

They appear to be discounting mortgages, which is a very curious thing to do.

It's like when you go for security clearance and any unsecured debt apparently makes you vulnerable to being bribed or blackmailed, but have a massive mortgage paying for the roof over your head is just fine.

The idea that a mortgage is safe as houses is really ingrained in UK culture.

They said the people in the richest quintile had on average £10k of savings, not that having £10k of savings will put you into the richest quintile.

I didn't spot how the "Social Market Foundation" determined "rich", could be overall income, net worth, the number of rich tea biscuits bought per quarter.

i.e. this is based on income, council tax and the presence/absence of parasitical small humans:
https://www.ifs.org.uk/wheredoyoufitin/

Couples with no kids and a split council tax bill are likely to have saved more and borrowed less than a singleton with 8 kids shocker.

rich is what you make of it
I have mostly everything I want in life, good job, wife, kids etc
got a few quid tucked away for a rainy day but by no means a fortune
