Finally got an interim payment & obviously needed a big bike with summer nearly here...however, with a £500 budget theres not a lot out there!

£390 later, this happened.

https://i.imgur.com/WeR207gl.jpg

It has a logbook and a pile of panels but no key.

Removed ignition barrel, removed seat, removed tank and set about hotwiring it to see what worked and what diddnt.

https://i.imgur.com/Kpgk9Fql.jpg

Electrics checked out, so hooked up the remote tank and fired it up;

https://i.imgur.com/GLCB1rel.jpg

After a lot of popping, farting, refusing to rev and such it appeared to sort itself out!

RF600 Startup: https://youtu.be/HQnF7rAtCEY

Needs bar ends, tail light bulb, rear indicators and rear brake to have fluid in it. Also needs downpipes bodging as they disintegrated when it backfired Laughing

Right.

Make sure you check the plug caps, sometimes they don't fit properly need some wd/gt around them to stop rain going down. Same with battery terminals and vaseline, due to the way the fairings let water in

Bottom of tanks rust, so maybe drain it out and see how it's doing/add an inline filter.

The wiring to the indicators and horn always seemed to be fucked on ones I had.

The linkage on the brake pedal will rust and seize slightly.

The exhaust never seemed to line up correctly.

Don't trust the compartment, a big bump or a wheelie will have it bounced open. I glued a velcro bit over the top to help with it, and wired a cig lighter and foamed around the edge to help waterproof.

Clearances need to be done around 28k. Seems to be half and half from what I've seen on the 600s, the 900s never seem to need doing.

Good buy for the price. Patching up and palming onward or riding in to the ground?

See what it goes like when I get on it. Plan at the moment is to rag it about till I get a payout from the crash, if it proves itself to be reliable I may just end up keeping it as a winter hack/trackbike.

Went mad on eBay last night;

    Turn Signal Flasher BlInker Relay 12V 2 Pin For Motorcycle LED Indicator Light - £0.99
    SUZUKI RF600 RF 600 R CHAIN ADJUSTERS TENSIONERS - £9.99
    4x 16 LED Motorcycle Universal Mini Black Turn Signals Indicator Amber lights - £8.20
    Black Full Set Fairing Bolt Kit Fasteners Nuts Screws Suzuki RF600R 93-98 - £28.99
    Suzuki RF600 RF 600 1993 TAIL FAIRING CENTRE PIECE - £14.00
    RF 600 RR (GN76A) 1994 Replacement Fibre Exhaust Gasket x4 - £4.80
    Suzuki RF600 Rear Back Pillion Seat 1993 RF 600 0 £16.95
    1996 SUZUKI RF 600 FRONT EXHAUST DOWNPIPES DOWN PIPES HEADERS 0065 - £50.00
    2x Keys cut to ignition barrel - £30.00
    Tank rubber/bolt set £17.48
    4x CR9E £16.32
    Hiflo Air filter £7.87
    Hiflo Racing oil filter £3.46
    Magnetic drain plug/washer £2.74

Total - £211.78

The only issue I can see is that the downpipes take a three bolt can, whereas the Micron is a slip on. Will wait till it all arrives before deciding what to do about this.

Also need to order some tank rubbers, as one of them is what appears to be an M12 nut.

At the moment I'm about £600 in, but that's including a service & should be everything to get this back to a semi presentable state.

https://www.gumtree.com/p/honda-motorbikes/honda-cbx-750-fe-1986-customised-unfaired-matt-black-special-rat-bike-cafe-racer/1104707618

Could've bought that for the same monies, or a 60,000 mile ER-5...so I'm still winning. Laughing

Latest is that I've fixed all the weird lighting gremlins apart from the flash button. I've put the battery back on after charging and thankfully that seems to work okay. The tank is bodged on and the fuel tap seems to work.

I did ride it up and down the alleyway a few times, front brakes are acceptable, clutch is good, gearbox selects gears. It seems to be most of the way there, probbably a day needs spending on it. Confused

£20 - Super 4 10w40, 4ltrs
£11.99 - Numberplate/indicator bracket
£5 - Indicator leads

I think I've got everything I now need to put together & service this thing. Hopefully I can claw back some ponds by selling on the link pipe and Micron can.

Total spend so far: £638.77

Today I did;

Bleed back brake
Pack original downpipes with exhaust putty
Did wiring for indicators
Fixed clicky speedo drive
Bolted grab rails on
Fitted correct tail panel with screws not tape
Fitted universal tail tidy so i can have indicator brackets.
Fitted chain tensioner

Road tested it, performs well other than a slight splutter low down (however, I still need to do the service). It's quicker than a bandit and seems to handle better too. Mirrors shot on the right hand side.

Then jetwashed all the muck off it, it's been in a garage for quite a while stored up.

Need to bolt on indicators when they arrive, then we're on for MOT. Lower fairings wont be going back on till I've serviced it & im not pulling the tank off till the new rubbers arrive.

should probably remove the 'budget' bit from the title

Have returned;

1996 SUZUKI RF 600 FRONT EXHAUST DOWNPIPES DOWN PIPES HEADERS 0065 - £50.00
Indicator leads - £5

Did buy;

Gun Gum £3.99

Total now at £587.76 - less than £600 for a sportsbike including a service is still a budget bike Laughing

I've been reffering to it as shitcunt, but K-WOD is probbably more socially acceptable.

Have done, but your browser might be potato'd as they displayed fine previously on both my phone and work PC's Neutral

Bit worrying considering I'd road tested it at 90+ the night before. Has about 30-40cm of play in the rear shock linkage Shocked

Could pay out mega ponds for new bearings, replacement shock etc but instead I've found a guy breaking one. £30 has purchased me the suspension linkage, shock absorber, and swingarm so I'm off to Brighton to pick it up tonight. Mr. Green
