That last one was pretty slow and hard to get into, so I decided to make an arcadey one.

Also it turns out MegaUpload works (slowly) from China, so it's uploaded onto there. Only 30Mb.

Space Bird Missile Cats

Who can get the highest score? Wink

The first one was a point-and-click adventure thing, like Monkey Island but obviously nowhere near as good. Thread with download link here: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=299962

I thought about making a platformer but it's a little more difficult as the key-presses were going funny, e.g. when you hold down the arrow keys to get moving, it has that slight delay before the motion starts, much like when you're typing and hold down a letter and there's a slight pause before it starts to make a string of the same letter.

Probably quite easily sorted though, but I just dismissed it and made something relying on the mouse instead.

Also making animation frames for character movement is a bore, and platformers need loads of that! I'll certainly try at some point though because this game-making malarkey has proven quite fun so far.

What's a wad?

It would be quite fun to try that but I'd have to learn how to do stuff in 3D first, which might be a whole other kettle of fish, unless I can find some different editing/programming software to get me going with some presets etc. I might have a look anyway because an FPS would definitely be fun to make.

Anyone ever play Tyrian? After making this Space Cats game I now have a fair(ish) understanding of how it was made, and I think it was an amazing game so if I ever decide to have a really big project, I'll probably try something like that.

Had a quick go.

Lack of power ups made me sad.

226000 - not bad.

I was gonna add power-ups and even had a little sprite ready so that the bird would change to look a bit more badass while the power-up was functioning. But it was a massive amount of extra programming so I didn't bother.

Here's a quick high score effort from me:

Hint - crank up the game speed to start with a huge multiplier.

I tried to set it so you can just about get more points if you play it at a harder setting. You rack up mega points quickly but are more likely to die sooner.

Doom, the original versions Doom and DoomII are fairly unusual in that they consist of a game engine entirely configured in a control file with a .wad extension (Where Are the Demons). You can specify extra wads on the command line, so by writing a new wad file you can write a new 3d game, without having to get your head around the really complex 3d and animation stuff. There's loads of tool sets available to make the job easier. There are literally thousands of aftermarket wads around so it isn't that difficult. I've had a brief go at it myself, but haven't got the spare time to do a proper job of it.

Monkey Island 1, 2 and 3 are classics - clever, funny and at times batshit insane.

If you fancy having another crack at a humorous point and click affair and want someone to script dialogue, I'd love to have a go at that. I enjoy writing references to pop culture and just generally fun stuff in terms of puzzles.

Really interesting! Didn't know that, cheers. I'll look into it Thumbs Up

I won't have much spare time either soon though as it's back to classes in a week Thumbs Down

Cheers for the help offering Thumbs Up

I actually preferred making the arcadey game over the point-and-click one. But the software I used is specifically designed for adventure games like that, so I'll probably make another one some day and yeah if you want to write some stuff then be my guest. The dialogue script got a bit tedious for me at times.

It is difficult to do. I can understand why the Monkey Island games had so many people working on them now, to make the puzzles coherent-ish and keep it full of wisecracks. Gotta have good flavour text!

Half Life and Quake II were also good for making your own maps. I had a lot of fun making impossibly hard levels for both those games
