After doing a trackday at Oulton on a hired GSXR600, which was rather addictive, I decided to look into getting a barely road legal track biased 600 starter bike, with maybe some uprated suspension and a steering damper.

Anyway that went out the window and I had trigger finger on ebay and have just got this 1999 R6, bog standard except Harris exhaust. Edit 26,000 miles and no recorded history of anything.

So will start from a clean slate and hopefully develop it into a track bike, bit by bit so I can notice any changes.

- I'm thinking eventually and in this order
Service
New good track/road Tyres
Brake check and some good pads.
Nut and bolt check all over

Than ready for fist outing at Knockhill at the end of the month.

If still alive I can plan on the following
Supension refurb or maybe some upgraded decent second hand ones.
Cheap fairings
Quick shifter
Steering damper (If I've deemed myself a woos at this point)

Any tips for R6 welcome. I know nothing about bikes but plan to get the spanners out and learn on this one.

And now for yet another episode of telling my wife about something bought after it's too late for her to change my mind!

Below pics of R6 and a history of my biking career as I don't post much and can get it all out there at once. Can update this with bike crash pics also, hurrah.

I'd never been on a bike just over 4 months ago. do you think I've taken things too far? My wife does...meh I'm loving this midlife crisis!!

And me on the gixxer at Oulton, first ever bike trackday, in the damp....shitting myself on someone elses bike having never ridden a supersport before etc...

Can't be bothered doing another post so my road bike and other random moments of mad purchases. Two DT125's and an RT100. Anyone want to buy the DT's? Razz

DT's and RT 100 for a bit of fun RT is for my nephew, runs fine. Two DT's fit for the scrap!

And before two wheels. Radical SR3 is sadly gone (nightmare maintenanace and costs) and XR2 is written off as I wrecked it. Before and after shot.

They like to eat their own cylinder liners...

I'm happy with my current track toy which is an SV, however I'd like something more sporty, not the liner muncher though.

That car looks awesome Shocked

I would have maybe gone for an SV or even a 400 had one been available locally as I do fancy a race or two eventually and minitwins would be good. Plenty quick enough for me too.

Oh cylinder munching R6 is not a good start ha! How can I tell if cylinder is about to be munched? Or will I just have to wait for engine failure at critical point firing me skywards at great rate of knots to a mouthfull of tyres...or worse trees?

It may or may not happen, but they do have a fair few reports of the plating just giving up and causing mass issues, you'll know if it does happen.

Track days are definitely fun Smile

They are also famous for eating 2nd gear. Rag the shit out of it up to the redline in first bang it into second then same again. Do this a few times, if it falls out of Second you have a problem!

Just sent my wife, who is in the next room, a text that went like this.

"Fancy a lovely day out to Troon? Just you and me it will be romantic..........to pick up a motorcycle Very Happy. love you xxx"

Still no response, she's not going to be as happy as I am about this R6 I feel.

Well back from Troon and it's a nice place, first time over that way Smile

Bike home and very happy with it, 100 miles or so and the gearbox and engine seem very smooth. The bike is cleaner than I expected. Maybe too clean to rip up for track use.......so may need another bike haha.

Ebay purchase without viewing is taking a risk but so far so good.

One thing, holy jeebies this bike is quite nippy so i'll need to be careful. I'm at that dangerous nooby with some confidence stage in my riding career. Can remember my instructor warning me that's the time when things can go pear shaped fast!

Jelous of that setup with the fanatec, do want.

I knew about the 2nd gear issue on my R6 so always gave going from 1st to 2nd alot of mechanical sympathy and never had an issue, although annoyingly it plays on your mind, especially on track, but most bikes have little niggles anyway Smile

Oh deary dear. I had a shot of a friend of a friends GSXR1000 the other day, first time on a 1000 cc bike and now I want one or similar, no in fact I need one.

Way to much power, totally unusable for skillless noob and i'll be dead in a month but just feeling the power available was amazing, didn't have to rev it like a maniac like the R6 600. Also I have an extremely small penis so this helps perfectly.

A 1000cc sports bike is too much after recently passing test but meh bollocks.

I'm so tempted so have sent my dealer a mail asking what he'd give trade in on my CBR650 against any second hand 1000 CC widow makers. I'm tending towards a Fireblade but any would do, maybe even have a shot on a VFR.

Just bought my bike from them new in January so will probably loose about <1500 if I went ahead with anything though, ouch. Never buying brand new bike again.

Want to trade.

Used wife for Supebike.

One owner since new, (well that's a lie I actually later fond out that she had actually been well run in on many occasions prior to my ownership). A bit rough round the edges, fat arse, miserable bastard. But give it a few vodkas, turn the lights off and it goes really well.

Sounds much the same as my wife don't have a superbike to swap but I've got a mini moto in the garden if that's any good.
ps she drinks bucketloads of Stella so not exactly cheap to run Laughing
(the wife that is not the mini moto Shocked)

oops!Couldn't help it. This is the last. I pick it up next week.

Initial intention was to track my R6 but it is too nice and the track goodies make it too expensive to convert. R1 too fast to track for me.

Was at East Fortune last weekend and got some tips and advice where to start. Hope to do a race or two next season, if I can get to a non embarrassing pace.

NC24, ready to go in post classics, already with uprated race goodies that'll make no difference to me but sound good. This is previous rider he is 62!

You must be taking the same pills or drinking the same water as Fladdem I reckon!

I guess each and every machine you have is vitally important and has it's own ideal use so they all have to stay and are all your favourites too!? Laughing

Yes Stevo, well, emm, don't know what's come over me. Smile

Here she is home safe and sound. Proper race bike c/w tie-wraps and gaffer tape. Laughing Not cosmetically the best but cheaper than a set of track fairings and tyres for the R6, let alone all the other stuff that would have been needed to convert it.
The NC24 does have a maxton rear shock, Hyperpro front suspension springs, quick action throttle, comes c/w a bucket load of 'bits' spare wheels with disks, full stainless exhaust system with Quil end can, steering damper, rear paddock stand and 4 good tyres. Ready to race! Thumbs Up

While I'm at it R1 in current condition. Since getting this a few weeks ago I have had the brakes all done, service and taken horrible cheap blue bar ends of and fitted R&G.
£35 stator cover from China has arrived, to be fitted.

This is a really nice running bike, only one previous owner, full dealer service history just cosmetically challenged so i'm going to get it back looking good.

Got a quote to get the body work done and bike resprayed for £300, New Graphics set will be $75. Wheels are not bad but could do with a bit of TLC. Will fit R&G crash pritection.

These R1 heel plates are coming off I have the original. I will remove the tax disk holder at the same time Embarassed

Will post pics of bike when complete.

Going by the few I've seen they actually do look better in the flesh. They are just not a very photogenic bike.
