hello,

i have recently become the owner of a honda mtx 125, I'm told its a 1988 but was only registered in 92.

I was just looking for a bit of advice, what oil am i best topping the engine up with and also i have put a new speedo on and its not working, any suggestions?

there is a small tube coming off the top of the engine like a blanking cap or something, anybody know what this is for as there is a little leak in it blowing out air?

i also find i struggle to find neutral with this bike any ideas what this could be, not sure if its relevant but when you select first it doesn't make that click you usually get with 125's it seems to let you go past first a little
if anybody could help i would appreciate it.

thank you

ben

On an old bike like that the transmission will be a little warn, you will figure out how to hit neutral every time once you have had the bike for a while. The tube sounds like the engine breather, it allows air to flow in and out of the crankcase so it is not pressurized. Is the the speedo that is broken or has the cable snapped? Remove the cable and spin one end of it and see if the other end turns.

thanks for the reply killerbanjo,

is the transmition ok the way it is then?

the cable is new so defo working also took the clock off and that works, been looking into it today and discovered the pin in the wheel isn't spinning so that looks like my issue so will have to take that off and have a look.

that could be the right thing on the engine but looks like it has blown off in the past and somebody had bodged it back on with a makeshift metal clip, i will see if i can get a pic to show you.

i also noticed the taco doesn't work so will be replacing that however there seems to be a leak from where it connects to the engine and there is a whits substance in there, any ideas on this?

killerbanjo your project looks great, what paint do you use the colour your parts? does it finish up flawless and is it east to apply and hardwearing?

Is it an oil leak? an oil seal will need replacing if it is. The paint was super easy to apply, the nozzle on the can was the most controllable I have ever used! (in fact I have saved them so i can use them with other cans) The paint looked fantastic, but sadly turned out to be shit, It has rusted through in several locations (although I do live next to the sea) and I have since touched it up with standard acrylic car paint and all is good!
