Hello,
I realise this is a somewhat bone question but there's reasoning behind it. I'm off on the Santander ferry soon and wondered if the crew tie the bike down or you do it yourself and if so are you responsible if it topples?

The reasoning is when I popped up to Orkney last year the crew tied my bike down on very choppy crossings both ways. Going there was no problem but on the return leg when it was time to disembark the crew undid the ratchet and my bike pogoed over smashing the front end. After a load of tape and zip ties i made it about half a mile before the whole front end dropped away from a hair line fracture on the bracket which holds the clocks etc.

The ferry company were fine with the repairs but I had to make it clear that they had secured and unsecured the bike otherwise it would've put the claim at risk and I pissed the AA off with a 16 hour recovery the only good thing was my jock genes were pleased with saving the fuel money home!

When I went to Santander the crew tied it down. I think it might depend whose on duty though. I'm sure they would tie it down for you if you asked.

Brittany ferries have tied down on all the routes I have travelled. But you have to untie at the other end. They use good rachets and cushions to protect the seat.

Brittany Ferries to St Malo were careful and used quality tie-downs and padding where appropriate. I'm used to tying down bikes (transported off roaders for years) and was fairly impressed with the crews efforts.

The booze cruise from Ijmuiden to Newcastle is a different story - cheap & nasty tie downs and crew stay well away.
