I have been riding my XLR for almost two weeks now. Here is my road kill on this bike to date:

about a dozen rabbits

a starling, who went thru the spokes and had its head taken off.

a sparrow, who was flying towards me and hit me in the chest, i reckon the combined speed of about 80mph (i was doing 60) must have done it. I had my Blyde II on so it didn't hurt too much, but I had to stop and rub my chest!!!)

and as of last night...

a chicken.
I was going down the road past a house and the owners chickens were on the road, i slowed down as the chickens went for safety, but another i didn't see stood right in front and went under the wheel. I stopped the bike, took the dead chicken to the door and knocked to tell them I had just killed their chicken, but at having no answer, I just left the chicken at the side of the road, cleaned the feathers of my bike and carried on.

Anyone else got any interesting stories about what they've hit?

Have had rabbits and birds running out in front etc but havn't hit any I don't think.

Bambi is dangerous though, the bastard thing ran out in front of me and I decided not to aim for it but to try to miss it which I did but hit a tree instead. Bambi won't be so lucky next time although picking bits of it out of the front of the bike could be interesting. Laughing

I have not managed to run over any critters at all yet Shocked

Could be something to do with not often venturing out into the wilds of the English countryside, of course. And the "wild" foxes lurking about the streets of London late at night run too fast for me to get 'em (not to say I haven't TRIED) . . .

Twisted Evil

Probably just as well, I'd probably come off worse Rolling Eyes

a friend of mine did a pheasant at high speed (center chest job) on a GSXR750, damn near had him off and he ended up with some impressive bruises.

I've ran over a half-dead pheasant in my car before.

My dad once killed a goose.

Kickstart should take the credit for the best road kill though...

My instructors always said you couldn't run over a squirrel because they are too quick.

So I did

(ok it had already been killed by a car Rolling Eyes )

I've had a little bird fly into the front of the bike before but i'm sure it was fine. Smile
I've swerved quite a few times to avoid birds and hedgehogs (I don't like killing things, especially hedgehogs - they rule Razz )
The only animal thats been under my wheel was a squashed sea gull Laughing

Got a duck on the 125. Probably had a few bits and pieces with the merc, but I often go to work on empty lanes at 6am.

Most of it seems to run away. Certainly not much new stuff on the way home.

Have not had anything on the bike yet, apart from the myriad of bugs that pepper my my helmet.

In the car though i've had a pigeon, magpie ( which some how got through the front grill and jammed itself between the grill and the radiator until about 2 weeks later when I noticed it there when topping up the oil) and a rabbit.

By far the most impressive piece of roadkill i have been involved in was some years ago when my dad ran over a badger in the car, by christ did the car bounce over that.

My moped was terrible for running over rabbits. They seem to get used to running accorss the road just after a vehicle goes past (which usually means they are behind it) but they used to bang their heads on the alternator cover of the tomos then get run over by the back wheel.

You did the right thing in trying to tell someone about the chicken by the way (I am pretty sure they are on the list of domesticated animals). Also if you hit and kill or injure a cow, sheep, goat, pig, horse or (domestic) goose you are required to stop and report. If there is noone to stop and report to, then report it at the police station. Bizzarely, you do not have to report running over a cat.

The rozzers tried to charge me with failure to stop and report when I tangled with a sheep on Heartside pass. It was only because I could convincingly argue that it was uninjured that they backed down.

Honest Officer, as I fell off the bike, my leathers accidently came undone and I accidentally got stuck up this sheep.

Hi

Many years ago I ran over a sheep with my old 400 Superdream, at about 7am on the road from Porthmadoc to Bala.

Killed the poor thing, but managed not to fall off the bike (more by luck than judgement).

All the best

Keith

Thanks a lot for reporting back guys, lots of interesting stories.
Very impressive to stay on the bike after hitting a sheep keith!

Its odd how many people there are who have yet to hit a rabbit of bird. I live on a small island in Orkney where driving from one end of the island (8 miles) to the other you are GUARANTEED to see at least 20 rabbits crossing the road and u are probably goinbg to hit 1 or 2.

My dad hit a parakeet when he riding near bushy park in South London. I know it sounds weird but there's loads of them living in the park now.
It looked very colourful when he got home with these bright coloured feathers sticking out of the bike's fairing.
