Projector and screen - talk to me

Hi folks,
Im after a projector and screen for movie watching and sport. Building a house at the moment and thinking of installing a mechanized screen. I know nothing about screen or projectors.

If any of you have knowledge on this stuff I'd really appreciate some advice.

Not sure on budget, doesn't have to be the dogs bullocks, just want something decent.

Installed a screen at work. Works as intended with a short throw HD projector. Can possibly get prices however the projector would be overkill for you

Before buying a projector, check the price of the replacement bulb, as they are considered to be a 'consumable item' and are never covered by warranty. Some models cost almost as much to replace the bulb as a new unit!

You can also buy paint that is good for projection surfaces, so if you have a suitably flat wall, you could paint the whole wall instead of using a separate screen.

Is your room 100% light proof or is it just a normal front room or something? If it is a normal room, you will need to black it out as much as possible and get a higher lumens projector.

Bulbs vary in price from £40 for a pattern part to hundreds for OEM bulbs.

I had a phillips something or other with lens shift that was great. Meant I could position the projector wherever I wanted within reason. Most projectors have fixed lenses so you can only adjust zoom and focus meaning you need to mount it dead centre.

Get 1080p and nothing less. I had a 720p projector that was good but when the screen is effectively 100", you want that higher definition. Especially with films and sports.

The key thing with projectors is lighting. I swapped mine for a plasma because in the summer, without buying blackout cloth and having it hung up, the projector just wasn't bright enough.

Apart from connecting it to the laptop to see if it all worked etc I've never used it properly. I did find that a blackout roller blind works well as a screen though
