Since none of the available action cameras tick all the boxes for biking, or are ludicrously expensive, I'm mulling over the idea of building my own. I'm thinking maybe a raspberry pie with some sort of usb micro camera(s). I can do the software stuff easily enough, just not sure about the hardware issues. Has anyone else had a go at this?

What boxes do you need ticking?

Cheap
Front and rear cams
Powered from bike battery
Recording time only limited by SD size, in other words once it hits the file size limit it starts another file.
Also in an ideal world...
Bluetooth'd (or whatever) to a smartphone to transfer images onto dropbox.
HD if not too expensive, preferably good in low light.
Time date stamping.
Speed & location recorded (GPS from smartphone?).

Didi I mention cheap?

When you figure it out tell me. I've been thinking the same. £400 for a single go pro is just a bit much though.

A single go-pro is 97ponds for the cheap version. Im not sure what features you could possibly need while riding your bike

Limit would be nice...

Just 2 std would do.
Andy_Pagin wrote:

Available on most anyway. Just requires wiring to a couple of usb ports.

Many record to a time limit and start new files with no noticeable jump. far better to keep file sizes smaller.
Andy_Pagin wrote:

Hd is pretty much std. Low light can be a issue.

Why? More than 1 card and swop over. little point in keeping masses of video's of boring rides.
Remember 9 mins of 1080p is about 1 gig of data. That is going to be one hell of a lot of data to transfer via bluetooth and then to the net.
Andy_Pagin wrote:

Pretty much std. Although many turn off for good reasons.

Again. unless you are 100% legal, then its not best to have....
Andy_Pagin wrote:

Budget....
While I'm sure that you could do what you require. Fitting it all to the bike and finding good quality kit. Will be the issue.
Check out Techmoan. The best source for reliable reviews of cams Thumbs Up

Bluetooth for HD files? Little bit ambitious given average transfer speeds.

I have a spare Pi laying around. May give this a shot actually. And by that I mean I'll probably buy 2 cameras and then never open the boxes.

Contour Roam 2 is down to about £107 - £110 on Amazon atm. Sure they don't have GPS, but they're not a bad camera. Also not a replaceable battery, but a battery pack solves that. Also there's a basic GoPro Hero for £95 (also amazon)

Use your phone for GPS or get one of those little boxes that record to an sd, or build an arduino one.. (See this thread)

Mobius camera, waterproof case , drill back of case and chemical metal/epoxy/whatever usb power lead in so when you push the camera in, it pushes onto the usb plug, connect to 5v usb adaptor in dry location of your choice.

Mobius not only works very well, it's one of the only (or possibly the only) cameras where the power-in location works with the w/p case design to let you mod it for a permanent (or, rather, ignition switched) power lead.

Possibly, I'm brainstorming at the moment, not got around to any serious research. However I'm thinking of running two services on the Raspberry, one to handle accepting and recording data from the camera, and another to export the files once they're completed and closed, so a relatively slow export process shouldn't impact on image data collection. Of course I may well be completely wrong and the cpu may not be up to the job, but finding out is all part of the fun.

I'd probably consider making sure that wherever the bike parks overnight has WiFi coverage. Then, include a WiFi dongle in the Pi. You can write a script that will automatically upload the video clips over your local network to some form of server in the house (even another RPi connected to an external HDD).

I've transferred many files over bluetooth before, and really it seems too slow to use for regularly doing videos.

Welding up an ali waterproof case for mine. Dont trust flimsy plastic shit.

An advantage is camera extension wires are available and cheap, so you can mount the lens pretty much anywhere on bike, noone will notice it.
