Been reassembling my project engine, (Honda Xl125RC, 1982), and I'm now at the final stage, fitting the pulse generator.

I got all the parts out of the bag, I put them in when I dismantled it, I knew they would need cleaning etc. however on inspecting the bits there is a spring missing from the advance retard mechanism, the remaining spring looks stretched.
No problem I thought, I can use the springs from the spare unit I have.
A closer look reveals that it is an earlier unit and the springs are a lot thicker.

As with a lot of other parts, on this particular model, the advance/retard mechanism is the same as fitted to an XL200R, (US only, I think). I can buy a new unit for around £100, which seems a bit steep when all I need are 2 tiny springs.
The springs for my spare unit are available separately, the springs I need are not, I would have to buy the whole thing.

Does anyone know of anyone who can repair his type of unit, (basically replace the springs)?
I'm wondering whether a clock/watch repairer might be able to supply the springs, if I showed them what I needed.

How do I specify a spring to order a couple of new ones?

I presume that using the stronger springs from my spare unit would not be a good idea?

Any feedback on this will be much appreciated.

heavier springs less advance and vice versa I guess
the snag is matching new ones to get just the right curve
Are they easy to access? If you can find similar ones you may have to
try a few to get the results you want.
Any other models use the same or similar springs ?
got pics? dimensions?
I may have some from an ATU knocking about
If you to look further afield
You may get some, ideas here on this extension spring page
https://www.acewirespring.com/extension-springs.html

this place is in the UK

https://www.leespring.co.uk/extension_spec.asp?springType=E&forWhat=Search

I'd also check out local model shops as well, they often carry or can source small springs

Thanks for the info Mr Forte!

Here are the offending items.
On the left is the one I need, missing one spring.
On the right is my spare, totally different shape, but has the same dia hole, for the cam shaft.
The spring in the one I need is 0.022in dia wire, the springs from my spare unit are 0.04in dia wire.

Dave, I found those springs last night but they are replacements for my spare unit. Number 18 on this diagram:-

https://images.cmsnl.com/img/partslists/honda-xl125s-1982-englandmph-pulse-generator_big00029547e__0200_fe65.gif

This is the unit I need, it seems to be the same part for both the XL200R and the CB125 , the springs I need are not listed as separate items:-

30220427164 £101.29 +vat ouch !

Seem to remember playing this game back in the 90's got out of it by finding a 2nd hand unit for the customer I don't think there will be many left !!

I like lot of repairers have lots of odd springs but not those

Dave

having had a close look at the photos on CSMNL, the parts you highlighted may be the right ones, I've ordered them, have to wait and see what turns up.

Part of the problem is my bike is a XL125RC, (1982), which never seems to turn up on any web listings, the XL for that year is listed as an XL125SC. Previous to this year the 125 XL's were twin shock, 6v models, whereas the one I have is the first single shock, 12v model.

A PITA that

That engine is almost identical to the Kymco Pulsar lump we have here right now.
Apart from it being CDI not points of course.
That engines been copied so much I'm
wondering if an upgrade to CDI is possible by swapping the easily sourced and cheap LH casings and associated gubbins?

It is a CDi Engine! Says so on the "pulse generator" cover. Mr. Green
I claim to know sod all about ignition systems, but there are definitely no points!

I'd get the dimensions of the spring first
and make a guess at initial tension and spring rate
and see what comes up

Good things come to those who wait, apparently!

Thought I'd have a furtle around in the boxes of bits that I got with this bike.
Look what I found a whole advance/retard unit with springs attached and intact, RE-FOOKIN-SULT!

I'm a happy bunny! Mr. Green

Going to drop this in a jar of paraffin to soak!
