Hi All

I can hear an annoying ticking on my FZ750 at idle. It either disappears or gets drowned at higher revs though. I've been listening around with a large 'screwdriver stethoscope' and can't locate the noise however.

I have one broken exhaust collet which means #1 might not be sealing properly and I've read that can lead to a curious sound - but ticking ? Seems to be synchronised to engine revs.
Any other thoughts ?

Cheers

It could be the timing chain tensioner. That noise usually goes away with revs. Thumbs Up

Also, that bike has got a ''car-like'' alternator there, doesn't it? Try to turn on and off lights and so on and check if the noise changes.

Get the bike out of any wind ( in a garage), hold a piece of toilet paper near the exhaust collets, see if it blows about, if it does it indicates exhaust gas leaks ( blows the paper).

Perhaps you have an excessive valve clearance? usually they go tighter with time but that's not a hard and fast rule.

When my XJ600 developed a tick I was convinced it was valve related. I changed the tensioner, checked and adjusted the clearances (twice) and still it ticked, just like a valvey sound. Turns out it was a blowing gasket on one of the head-to-downpipe joins. Fixed that, tick went.
