 |
|
Good evening all,
Just got an Aprilia RS125 (full power) with a dead battery problem.
I jump started it from one of our cars and it rode perfectly. Got home, with no issue, tried starting it an hour later and it was dead.
So yesterday I brought a new battery, filled it up, charged it and stuck it in the bike. The bike ticks over but won't start. The battery is reading 13.2V when its sitting there, and about 10-11V when I try start it. So I jump started the new battery and it started immediately. It sounds like it wants to start, but without the car battery hooked up it won't.
So I refurbed the old battery, topped up with distilled water and charged it. Battery read 13V so I put it in, tried starting it...engine ticked over but didn't start, showing about 10.8V. The lights, dials, etc. are nice and bright with either battery connected, and dim very slightly when I try start the bike.
Considering the bike runs mint and the alternator definitely works, if I run the bike for 10 minutes, the battery holds charge for about 40 minutes before dead again. I've tried two different (albeit both cheap, although I know one works well.) battery chargers, with both batteries.
Was the original battery dead, and unlucky enough that the new replacement was a dud, or bike issue? ____________________ Suzuki TS50X 1999 - Boom! Sold.

Get the engine running then put a multimeter across the battery terminals.
Rev the engine to around 4000rpm and check the voltage reading.
Report back. ____________________ Suzuki GT250 x7------- Fazer 600------CB250RS------Aprilia Rally 70----- Bandit 600

Hi,
as above. Get a multimeter (& learn how to use it properly, like I had to recently )
You only need to know how to measure voltage as low as 10v dc & as high as 70v ac.
Forget what the LCD says, it lies.
& the battery wont start charging back up until the engine is running at 5000rpm.
So test charging circuit at this, as well as at idle & also with engine off.
cheers,
GAZ
ps : I hope you havnt f*cked your new battery by hitting it with car battery. |

Voltage isn't everything you know!
Even a brand new battery off the shelf can be duff - it's possible that the volts are there, but the battery doesn't have the power to deliver enough amps to crank the engine.
Take the 'new' battery back to where you bought it from, and get them to do a 'drop test' on it.
If the battery turns out to be good, you probably have something draining it when everything should be turned off. You can test this with an ammeter in series with the battery by removing the earth connector from the battery negative terminal, and bridging the gap with a multi-meter set on a 10amp range.
Don't do this on the live (positive) side. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)
