Pfft. Every bike gets hammered through the gears to the redline on a dyno at the factory to check proper operation anyway.

Running in is for pussys. And people who are going to keep a bike for more than 25000 miles.

At 100 miles it isn't run in. As to running in being for pussys why?
The running in peroid on mine is 1000 miles.
It will be run in as the manufacturer recommends, if it prevents any problems in the future then fine, why take the chance.
Triumph, Honda etc certainly know more about their bikes than I do so I follow their advice regarding their bikes.

I mechanic for a mate of mine racing in various classes. Best way to get most power from a motor is to run it in for about 50 miles on a dyno. Rear wheel bhp proven. Running in for long periods of time glazes the bores and causes blow by. Extended running in periods are advised by manufacturers to cover their arses in the event of manufacturing defects causing early motor failure. 'Heads shot at 3000 miles sir? Obviously you didn't run it in correctly'.

The ped never blew up.

Given you start it, the clutch doesn't engage till 7,000rpm then the transmission holds it at 9,000-10,000rpm from the moment you pull away...that's fairly impressive. At 70mph it's spinning well over 12,000rpm.

I warmed it up nicely in the yard, gave it 15mins at tickover to get real hot and burn off the excess oil from assembly etc. Then took it out, mile or two to figure out what the jetting was doing....then re-jet at the side of the road, then max speed runs straight away. At the time I stripped it to put a more stupid barrel on it it was reading 130psi of compression despite being abused from the off, so I'd conclude that a harsh break in doesn't harm it.

Take it easy for a few miles just incase somethings not quite right (See the H100 dropping a circlip a few miles away from home) but bollocks to a 1,000 mile run in Shocked

I'd have run a ZX10R in as follows.

Key in at 0 miles, warm up for a few miles, 5 or so, full throttle in 1st 2nd and 3rd, knock down to 2nd for some engine braking and back on it for about 10 miles.

Head home, oil change with bog standard oil.

Repeat again with cheap oil.

Repeat but another change with filter and decent oil.

Done.

Afternoons work, winner winner.

NG streetstocks 700-1300 - won championship

NG GP45 - won championship

NG Open 600 - won championship

BSB stock 600 - Highest finish 9th at Brands Hatch with a pole in the first qualifying session in the wet at Thruxton. Bike was suspect throughout the season, supposedly refreshed earlier but only put out 114hp on the dyno, should be closer to 125hp. Finished 25th over all despite the first half of the season on a hobbled bike.

Occasional entries in the Lansdown classic cup on a loaned Matchless G50 - numerous top 5 finishes.

Numerous class lap records still held.

The GP45 bike with my turbo bandit at Thruxton.

No reputable engine builder in the bike racing business in our experience advises a long break in period, and we have never had an engine failure in a race bike.

Edit: should probably say, frequent oil changes and the best quality oil you can purchase are more important.

Edit edit: Also, if you have an injection bike fit a power commander and get it setup on a dyno properly, the manufacturer will have a map in it that makes it run lean and hot to meet emissions standards. This will do far more damage in the long run than not running it in. People only tend to do this when they fit a race can, but it can be done on a standard bike. It will produce more power, less flatspots and live healthier. Thumbs Up

I bought a brand new ZX10R myself a few years ago (2012) so the same as yours bar a few minor tweaks. The first 100 miles it'll be tight as fook. Take it easy it's an odd sensation. From 100 miles take the run in rpm in the book and add 2k to it. Try and keep it below 8k rpm until you pass 650 miles then take it for its first service. After the first service you'll get the proper oil in it. Do another 50-100 miles below 10k rpm to flush out the thicker oil from the run in period then feel free to go for it. (Be sure to get it serviced at a proper place, you'll want to keep that warranty, I needed it)

While running it in use the full range of throttle and load up that engine and gearbox within that rpm limit. My bike now has 7500 miles on the clock and runs perfectly. Hope that helps.

At the other end of the engine scale, this has worked so far with my little MSX. Out the show room door, about 4 miles through town to make sure it was hot, then full throttle to about 1000 revs short of the red line through all the gears all the time,

Then an oil change to cheapest asda 10w40 at 70 miles, and again at 200 and 400. Changing to a fully synthetic at 600.

It's now on 4500 miles, and just did 800 miles through scotland at full throttle 90% of the time, and used no oil at all.

My limited expierence is that the mototune run in method works very well.

Awesome, I'm glad to hear that you saw the full 13.0:1 compression in all cylinders last time you tested it.

You could test it with 2 cheap lifan 125cc engines, available new for <£200 each
