The older 750cc ones I mean (1990ish.)

Has anyone tried them? Are they as great as people say they are, or totally overrated?

Haven't.

For they money you are paying you are getting a cult bike.
From what I've heard they would probably have trouble keeping up with a modern 600, never mind something like the new GSXR750.

Probably cost about the same as a new bike for a quite used example, but will keep it's value much, much better.

Would only consider one as a 'pose' bike really.

The VF750R wasn't a particularly great bike. Something to do with Honda faffing with gear driven cams at some point. The slightly later VFR's are excellent all-rounders though.

Ooops, I was thinking RC as he has the NC and has mentioned them before.

They were only ever considered 'good' as allrouders as far as I know, jack of all trades an' that Smile.

they are good bikes, and sound great (only the very latest 800 ones don't have gear-driven cams) comfortable for all day riding but they won't keep up with hot-poop sports bikes. v-four means they are a bit more expensive/difficult to do big maintenance jobs on. best ones are probably a bit later than 1990 tho

Only a problem if you want to skim the head, and far more reliable. Honda used these as they had a seriously bad reputation for engine reliability in the late 1980s, mainly as a result from serious cam chain problems with the CBX550, CX500 and VF750 (although all the other problems with the VF750 engine did not help).

One reason why I take people comments about reliable Hondas as a bit of a joke.

All the best

Keith

The VFR750 in the right hands isn't slow, mate of mine had one (M reg I believe) and went for a blast into Wales with him, he was seriously quick, the roads, traffic and his self preservation were holding him back, not the bike. Like almost any bike, ride it right and you'll be quick enough to keep up with anyone.

the vfr is a very good, but an extremely boring motorcyle, there are much better alternatives in the Triumph range, sprint rs for one. trust me i have tried both..

A Sprint RS is all very well, but I would imagine that its a bit out of John's price range, being that they start at about 4k! Shocked

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
