Righty ho, after setting up a previous thread regarding my indicators playing up, I have since bought a multimeter, learnt to use it, and tried to teach myself the basics of electrics using youtube and a haynes manual. I've managed to make some progress, but I would really appreciate a little advice. As I really need to get this sorted out quickly.
The initial problem was the front l/h indicator stopped working, at the same time, the rear l/h indicator and l/h indicator dashboard light would come on but not flash, they stayed on solidly. Both r/h indicators and r/h idiot light still worked fine. I replaced both l/h indicator bulbs and inspected the bulb sockets(?) for corrosion and found nothing.
I then went to the relay, took it off, cleaned to connectors on it and refitted it, and nothing, all indicators stopped working.
Using the multimeter and going by the haynes manual, I have established that there is power going to the relay, (~12v) and that there is continuity between the relay and the indicator switchgear on the handlebar (I checked for continuity in both left and right positions). On the advice of the haynes manual, I am going to renew the indicator relay (£7 off ebay, worth a shot).
Again, I am really new to anything to do with electronics so I was just wondering if, before the relay arrives, there is anything else I can check or do just in case it turns out to not be the relay?
Would it be worth physically dismantling all four of the indicator units just to make sure there is no corrosion or buggery in the wiring?
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks. ____________________ Passed A2 licence 19th Dec '14. |

The front indicators are connected to the main wiring harness by a small piece of sub-loom up under the fairing.
A square, red, 4-terminal connector block connects both indicators into the main loom. You undo this when you want to remove the front fairing.
The 4-wire bundle then splits with two wires either side, clipped onto the inside of the fairing and attaches to the indicator units by two bullet connectors.
I dimly recall this sub loom running across the inside of the frontmost and lowest point of the fairing, below the headlight unit. (Not gospel, I've owned at least one bike which had wiring connectors there, I'm not certain it was a GPZ)
Worth checking these connections. Particularly the two bullet connectors to the left flasher.
You may need to totally or partially remove the front fairing to do so but I'd have a good look up under there with a head torch and a mirror to see if you can get at them without doing so.
If you've not had the front fairing off before, take care, it's easy to crack it either side of the clocks as you stretch it round the subframe. You'd need to undo that red connector and disconnect the headlight bulb connector to remove it totally. I also dimly recall being able to do most things just by undoing the bolts, pulling it forwards slightly and letting it hang down onto the front mudguard.
Link to an ebay auction of that sub-loom so you can see which bit I mean. I'm not suggesting you replace it but there's a good chance the bullet terminals could do with a clean. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. Thanks, that's really useful to know. I'll have a chance to have a better look tomorrow but I did have a look at the front fairing and just tucked underneath the headlight I can see a couple of bullet connectors in the same colour as the ones attached to the loom on the link you provided.
Please excuse my idiocy but, how do I go about cleaning the bullet terminals? Is it a case of just pulling the wiring out and then sticking it back in? Will I need to do any soldering to reconnect? ____________________ Passed A2 licence 19th Dec '14. |
