Out of curiosity has anyone used one before? something like MS5950 scan tool.

I noticed they are used to diagnose issues in cars now days and tbh motorcycles don't seem too far off in terms of complexity (EFI, sensors etc) and some seem to exist like the one mentioned above they can reset fault codes and what not but I don't really see them getting mentioned in workshop/Haynes manuals, which makes me wonder why do the ports to use such scanners even exist.

There's no standard for bikes, so every manufacturer has gone their own way.

There are tools available. You can, for example, buy a "GS-911" tool for BMWs. It'll cost €260 plus postage for the most basic 'enthusiast' version that's limited to being used on 10 individual bikes, up to €710 for the wifi Pro model. It essentially does two things:

1) Resets the service nag.
2) Tells you to take it down to the nearest Motorrad for another gouging.

Contrast with OBD readers which can be had for the price of a veg pakora, chicken biryani and nan bread the local curry house.

I recently bought a Bluetooth OBDII plug off eBay, complete with a full version of the 'Torque' app for the grand price of £4.99.

This is great for car servicing and going to look at used cars - and since it decodes ECU signals from the 'K-Line', I thought it would be a good idea to try and adapt it to look at the 'K-Line' on my Honda.

A lot of modern bikes have a diagnostic port, but unlike cars, they don't have standard connectors, and they don't use standard communication protocols either - so unless you have access to the coding and protocol used, these cheap ELM327-based scanners won't work.

The cheapest motorcycle scanners I have found, are the MS5650 from WAS Services or the MemoBike 6050 from Motorscan.

They no longer have prices on their websites, but IIRC around £350 before you start adding adapters and software.

Some bikes have a way of reading and resetting 'trouble codes' by flashing an led on the dash - but you will need a workshop manual to decode them.

Thanks for replies guys, I'm gonna pass then I was just hoping for something that could potentially tell you which cylinder is misfiring etc very quickly and easily but they seem a little too pricey so I'll pass for now at least, no point really in investing on a proprietary one for one model of bike IMO unless it's cheap
