Chaps

Had a chat with a Policeman the other day and they are now using www.bikeregister.com to check if a bike is stolen.
Registration is free although they try to sell you some odd stickers so may be worth registering all of your bikes on in case they get stolen.

As you would expect from me this isn't meant as spam just a little thing that might help get stolen bikes back.

Trouble is, different forces seem to use different systems.

Did he mention if this was just his local force or countrywide?

I know our lot in Cumbria use the DNA UV and microdot tagging and smartwater to identify recovered bikes/property (if and when they can be bothered). They don't necessarily have the equipment to check for some of the chip-based systems.

From the site: Every Police Force in the UK uses the BikeRegister database to search for stolen & recovered bikes

Not sure why it's not been publicised more if that is the case.

After TFL and the Met adopted them it is now countrywide.

Not sure either, I only discovered it as I saw one of the Met Police's roadshows on Old St.

I believe they are quietly encouraging bike shops to register all new bikes on purchase as a stealth way of growing the system and pushing for second hand shops to register all sales as well. Pushing less for private citizens to do it other than at the roadshows.

I have read that second hand shops have pretty much been instructed to check every purchase against the register as well as taking ID.
