hi, ive just bought a kawasaki bn125 and want to do an oil & filter change. it says to use a 10w 40 semi synthetic.
I have ordered the filter and i have 3 x 1 litre bottles of this gulf tec plus semi synthetic 10w 40 from another job, is this ok to put into my kawasaki or does it have to be specifically motorcycle oil.

I know oils have changed recently and you have to check the ACEA number to be compatible with your vehicle and the gulf tec plus is the same ACEA A3 as recommended on other sites for the BN125

any advice will be grateful as im new to bikes
thanks

Acea compatibility is specifically aimed at cars. Check for JASO MA1 or MA2 for motorcycle use

Semi-Synthetic Passanger Car Motor Oil

Could you answer my question? Why do people tend to try to put car oil into motorcycle engines? I do realize, that some bikes can handle certain car oils, but it just does not make any sense to me, in general. It's like human food vs. dog food. Both can be eaten and some dog foods are steroids/hormones free, so harmless to people, but why would you eat dog food at the first place? Confused

Depends on the way you look at it. If your human food was more readily available and cheaper (in the UK, normal food is VAT free while pet food is subject to VAT) while just as good why wouldn't you feed it to the dog?

It isn't that long ago that none of the bike makers bothered specifying bike oil, while bike specific oils were a fairly small niche market. If you have a pre 2000 bike the manual probably just lists API SE or SF oil.

All the best

Most of the motorcycle engines have wet clutches, these are lubed with the same oil the engine uses. Cars, commonly, don't have that.

Car oils might have additives and friction modifiers in it, which could cause the motorcycle clutch to slip. Yes, some car oils would work with motorcycle engines just fine, but some oils wouldn't.

In that case it is an SL spec oil, which is new enough that it possibly does have friction modifiers in it that the clutch might not appreciate.

All the best

And that's the annoying bit about bike oils - we pay more for less.

Eh, I've just put some of Herr Lidl's best 15W40 £10-for-5 litrons into the Nazi Tractor. I'll be sure to let you know how much I die.
