In the course of replacing a snapped throttle cable on my Honda Magna, I'm having trouble rerouting the new cable. When I took the old cables off, I did follow it with a length of string to preserve the routing, however this got accidentally pulled out whilst working on another part of the bike! I cannot now recall the exact routing of the cables and have tried all the sensible-looking routes, none of which result in smooth operation of the throttle in all positions of the steering, even though there didn't seem to be any kinking in the cables that would look bad enough to seize it. I'm sure there are no problems with the new cables, the carb assembly, or the twist grip, as I've reassembled the whole lot with the carb assembly sitting on top of the bike instead of inside the frame, and it works perfectly.
If anyone has the same bike and can provide any pictures of the correct cable routing, or can direct me to a routing diagramme online (I've already looked but can't seem to find one), or can point out any obvious thing I might have missed, that'd be great. Thanks ____________________ Previous bikes - 1984 Honda VF500 (FII) Interceptor and 1990 Yamaha RXS100

If you can find a service manual for your bike, it should have a routing diagram in it. In future, route the new cable alongside the old, disconnect the old cable, connect the new one and only then remove the old one. |

Online images suggest a few possible routes but usual form is that the cables run under the clocks and behind the headlight, then between the left fork and headstock, down the left side of the headstock and over the rocker cover as this gives the route that bends them the least.
However if the carbs work freely laid on top of the engine but bind when fitted that suggests that the cables are being pulled through a tighter bend somewhere and it's using up all the free-play. Throttle cables become tight when bent through a radius so slacken off all the adjustment to give yourself maximum free-play and install the carbs then try again. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

Not much use now but digital photography has been the biggest forward step in the last 20 years when it comes to routing cables, wires and hoses on complex japanese motorcycles ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink.
