Okay, so the bike is just about to go off to the mechanics for a service ( £160 ) and i asked him about the cost of a 2 Stroke top end rebuild and he'd said £250, so i am going to do it myself instead as i think this is all overpriced.

What would i need to rebuild a Gilera RCR 50 Top End?

You're paying £160 to get a 2-stroke serviced at a garage? That's a very expensive spark plug and oil filter.

You will need a manual, a few decent tools, and some common sense.

No oil filter on the RCR.

What years the bike? They had a few different engines in them, prices vary massively.

As far as I can remember the Gilera RCR use derbi senda engines, Depending on the year of your bike it will vary but as far as I remember the gilera uses a D50B0 (engine code), EB050 engine code was used in some years aswell, piston kit isn't expensive, depends if the barrels in good condition, when I rebuilt my am6 engine I put a complete top end on (100 GBP)
Piston, rings, gaskets, head, barrel, I used a Doppler standard 50cc top end for my 50, and that never went bang once! Use good oil and warm it up properly!
i personally wouldn't pay £250 for a top end rebuild, maybe on a 125 I would but not on a little 50!
Hope I helped!

you are going to spend £160 on a service, when you are capable of carrying out a top end rebuild yourself, why?

The bill for the rebuild seems reasonable to me. The service seems expensive.
