Very Happy So I've decided to finally get a bike & soon taking the Theory test!

Used to have a 125 Yamaha crosser about 20 years ago just for a bit of fun and always wanted to get another bike but never got round to it. Now 35 years old, it's about time to get something for fun and possible commuting.. Riding around the world one day is the ultimate goal, haha Very Happy (one step at a time)..

I spent the last 6 years living and working in China and now back in UK, i'd like to get something fun on the road. I was thinking that a good compromise between off-road and on-road (looks wise and literally) would be a supermoto, as they seem powerful, agile and look great!

Someone recommended a Suzuki DRZ 400sm, which I really like the look of, though not sure how to really asses what's good and what's not, regarding used bikes. Seen a few on autotrader and ebay etc, though still unsure. I'm seeing 2001 models going for around £2,000.. is this about right,,?

Very Happy

I've been eyeing up DRZ400's the last few days too. Don't know why, I can't afford one till september!

but anyway, the ones i were looking at were around £2200 and were a fair bit newer than the one you mention. One in particular was an 07 plate with 19k miles and had a few things done such as braided lines and Jack up links fitted.

so i reckon you could land something a bit newer for £2k Thumbs Up

Prices are all over the place at the moment, it's spring fever. Avoid "very reluctant sale" types.

You have a category A license, right? Without "79 (tri)" on it?

Yeah, i'm not sure whether to get a standard model and mod it myself or look for one already mod'd.. I don't want to get anything that's been ragged over the last 10 years, though maybe no way to really tell.

Yeah i've only got Category A license at the moment. I'm in the process of getting proper bike license, though may take a month or so..

'A' is the motorcycle category. Well, AM, A1, A2, A.

The reason I asked is we've had a few folk say "DVLA have given me motorcycle entitlement!" because they're showing as having "A" on their license with a little unexplained "79(tri)", "79(3)" or "793" beside it which means (although of course this isn't explained) trike only.

If you're doing full A then you'll be passing on a 600/650 or bigger bike. Do you particularly want to go smaller than that for your own bike? No problem if you do, I'm on the lookout for something similar myself at the moment. Wink
