Hi,

I haven't posted or been on here for a fair while however I expect this to be the correct place to post this.

Last August time after a hard ride out my zx6r j2 all of a sudden lost its power and started ticking badly, pulled up and set off home again, then it magically fixed itself for around 2-3 miles, and then re- started ticking. No idea what was wrong with it, I tried changing plugs and what not but no luck.

I put it in my garage and brought it back out yesterday, had to bump it off and it started first time as usual, still with its ticking noise and loss of power. It goes, back fires, misfires, splutters- but it does go, slowly.

Anyway I rode it to a garage who said it sounds like the valves have bent. But why would the bike break, fix for a few miles, then break again if that was the case?

Well I tried to take it to a different gage today, and half way there it decided to adopt a major ticking noise, as though a chain is spinning round extremely fast- faster when revved. And a nice big cloud of white constant smoke out the back. Albeit, it started to ride better than previously but still loss of power and what not.

I took a video of the noise before putting her back away.

Would anybody have any idea what's wrong? And what's it going to cost me for repair?! Sad

Apologies if I've missed anything off, if you need more info then please do ask.

Thank you in advance,

M

The video link doesn't work.

When you say a ticking, could it electrical arcing causing one of the plugs not to fire properly?

I don't think it would be anything electrical from the noise Sad

Yeah that's definitely a mechanical noise. Doesn't sound too clever.

Could be that a valve has hit a piston, it sounds like it's running on less than four cylinders as well, so it might be two cylinders affected.

Sounds like something in the top end. Could be the cam chain as it seems louder on the right? Maybe it has jumped a few teeth, then bent your valves, which could explain why it went from a quieter tick to a louder one.

that does not sound nice, expect engine out and major strip to locate issue.

I thought that may be the case Sad. It's strange how it happened though.

The cam chain slipping sounds about right as it had the common ticky noise for a few months before this happened. I was confused as to how it broke- then fixed- then rebroke again.. However now after something happened today I think it's 10x worse.

Is there a "cheaper" fix- I know it's penny pinching being cheap however if I can keep the costs under a new engine then great.

Would this be of any use;

Or am I completely in the wrong area? I'm no good with mechanical issues Crying or Very sad

Two ways to go, strip the broken engine, find the issue and price up a good repair

or

Fit a known good complete engine.

You won't know which makes the most sense until you have done the first.

Why on earth would you run it, let alone ride it sounding like that?

The "ticking" that was there for months was a noisy cam chain tensioner which i had a browse around previously and determined it was a common thing with the zx6r engines.

Last year when it broke, and this morning, it wasn't anywhere near this bad, it was a loss of power with a couple of splutters and pops, with a loud but slow tick in the background.

It was on the way to the garage that it went in to this state, I was about 2 miles from home.
