Chaps,

The screws on the top of the reservoir/MC on the other half's Hornet are chewed. I've been soaking plusgas in to no avail. Is there anything else I can do before I bin it?

Try using a punch and hammer to drift them round first. If you really can't shift them then just drill the heads off carefully and use molegrips to remove the remainder. No need to bin it - this is quite a common thing. Thumbs Up

Mine were bad, a quick whack with an impact driver and they came out no problem. I know some people on here say don't do that on a master cylinder as you'll damage it but as as long as you're not going to town on it it will be OK.

Replace the screws with allen headed screws.

I just drill them if they are badly burred. Easy-peasy.

They chew up partly due to the crappy materials, partly because they're a water trap and corrode but mostly because almost everyone uses the wrong screwdriver. Most of them have JIS heads and most people do not own a JIS screwdriver.

A blob of silicone sealant on top of the new ones will help prevent water trapping/corrosion on either an allen head or a JIS crosshead.

If you file a few MM off the tip of a philips screwdriver they do the job quite nicely.

hi,
usual honda issue, due to someone using incorrect screwdriver (jis)
4mm hss drill bit (titanium or cobalt unnecessary with these soft bolts) & remove the heads.
lift off m/c cover & remove bolt stubs with grips.
fit nice new countersunk bolts with non jis heads. i used standard machine screws with slotted screwdriver for ease of removal in future.
done it sunday on an nsr.

cheers,
GAZ

You almost certainly have a JIS screwdriver in the bike tool kit.

Not something they seem to sell in the UK.

More accurately its a Japanese thing (JIS= Japanese Industry Standard)
Standard for them, bloody unusual for the rest of the world! Smile

They sell plenty of them on Amazon though.

I've done this and they do work OK, but I bought these last month

https://ruggedroads.co.uk/epages/00cbb604-5d1c-407e-8207-580e14387ec5.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/00cbb604-5d1c-407e-8207-580e14387ec5/Products/%2212705/6/8%22

There are lot of people who advertise them for sale, but every time I've tried ordering, they are mysteriously out of stock - this lot had them though, delivered in about 36 hours.

I've been asking all my tool suppliers to try and get hold of some JIS drivers for years, but they never have any joy - annoyingly, I got the new flyer from my Snap On agent last week and they've introduced a brand new 4 piece set Evil or Very Mad

The upside is, they are twice the price, which is standard for SO.

My collection of bikes includes only two from Japan. They're Kawasakis so I, too, should be okay Wink

All my bikes have them and I have at least by each of the big four.

Incidentally, a lot of people think JIS screws have a dot on them as an identifier, but they don't always, so that Philips screw you're confident you have, because it has no dot, might still be a JIS.
