Does anyone have any recommendations for paint to use to paint a frame? It's seems like it's going to be a temp job (Couple years) until i decide what stays and what goes in terms of brackets and stuff so powdercoat is out of the question until i'm happy with it but i'd still like it to look presentable in the mean time.

Just your bog standard steel tubed jobby but as it's had bits and pieces chopped and changed i'd like something thick and probably brushed on to hide the slightly untidy jobs .

I had thought about Hammerite but it's been getting a good slating recently so i'm reluctant. So... Thoughts on a postcard Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Unfortunately, new hammerite definitely ain't so good as the old.

The old hammerite turns to rubber or a "skin of evil" when it sets. The modern stuff seems to turn into a hard plastic material and it needs several weeks to really set.

It's not awful. It can look fantastic on prepared surfaces such as forks that have been primed. I still use hammerite and it still does the job. Alas, I have reached a point whereby I will entertain alternatives.

If I remember correctly, red oxide and bitumen paint is supposed to be Numero Uno...for sheds.

True - my local wholesaler has stopped stocking it in favour of Rustins and Plasticote paints.

Might be worth getting a quote from your local spray shop, using a 2-part epoxy based paint, or a plastic 'wrap'.

My current hack I did a quick and dirty job with poundshop metal paint.... it's held up really well.

I used the same stuff on my project frame though and after a few days it blistered. I redid that with hammerite, it looks ok 2 months later sat in my front room.

First pics I could find

£ shop stuff 7(ish) months after doing

Hammerite (it's only been sat indoors though), there are some bad brush marks that is a reflection on my shit skills not the paint.

Might give a couple types ago and see how they go on. I would get it done properly at a paint shop but it seems a waste if i'm gonna be chopping and changing stuff too.

Before powdercoating was around we used Valspar enamel applied with a brush & it came out looking like black chrome.

Thought i'd give a bit of an update.

Took a chance and bought some stuff called Fortress Gloss Metal paint from B&Q mainly because they had no Valspar stuff which was listed on the net and the only other option was was Hammerite.

Lucky guess, this stuff worked great! Goes on nice and easy with a small brush, Dries smooth with NO brush marks to be seen and looks great! Only downside is that it's a little thin so drips do appear. If i had to do it again i would use a few thin coats rather than thick. I wouldn't paint over the frame numbers either next time, I'll have to sort that out when it's cured properly Embarassed
