Insurance question

Not sure what to do. Had a little spill today, nothing fast. Damage is to front, right upper/lower/mid fairings, mirror and bar end. Slight scratches on frame and engine case but the slider did its job.

Now heres the issue. I think I can repair to a standard I'm happy with for about 350. However, if I go through insurance, I have a £60 excess, would they write it off and allow me to buy back as salvage or are they more likely to repair it? I paid 4250 3 months ago.

Not sure if to repair myself or bite the bullet and go through insurance.

Any advice appreciated

It sounds daft, but that could result in a write off, in which case the value of the bike will be decreased because the cartel don't like paying out twice.

I'd probably go self repair, but it's a borderline case unless you can remove all signs of damage. Tough call.

It's £500 but they sold me "excess protection" so it's covered. Looks worth it.

Either way the value is going to drop as I won't be buying the standard fairings, they're too expensive, so it will be a repair or Chinese job. That's why I'm debating it. Fix up but (Eventually) sell for a bigger loss or claim and buy back at a lower price.

For £350 I'd DIY it. Sounds like you're a new rider with a new bike. That £350 will be cheap compared to your next 5 years of insurance premiums loading and if you're young and thinking of getting a car soon it's the best way for sure.

That. I have 4 separate insurance policies and have to[2] declare and pay for Mrs Borg's car park shunt[1] on all of them for 5 years. Sad times.

[1] She was a named driver on my policy.
[2] I should but don't declare it on my bike policies, because I read the wording of their question very, very carefully and I believe they didn't ask what they thought they asked.

Fair points. Thanks for the advice, I think I'll do that. It's a 2007 bike so it's not new by any means but it was in good nick and it's my first spill in a couple of years riding. Oil on the road, lowside, fairings ruined. Expensive day out!

Only if it is a total loss - the excess protection policy won't respond otherwise and you have a 500xs

My 250 got CAT Cd for a lot less damage. Granted it was worth half the value of your bike but insurance these days prefer the no hassle route and won't think twice about writing it off.

Partly, partly dealer, and its first registration was 2009. 8000 miles by 2012, 1000 added in the following two years. Had tyres on with plenty life left which stopped being produced in 2011 (so I've been told)

I've decided to give it a go sanding down and spraying the fairings which were already black. They look ok so far. Glued the only crack and glued a bolt tab back in place with resin bond. Hopefully should just be a new mirror and headlight needed!

Not mega bad money but I'd have done private for a little less.

Can you not just pay the hundred or so quid for a painter to do the work? If its one colour all over I'd risk DIY but if its got anything funky, off to painters.

I gave that a go first. I've filled and bonded the crack, it's amateur but it's not in a noticeable place. And then I've just given it 4 coats of gloss black. It didn't have any pattern on the damaged fairings.

It's not amazing by a long shot and it will need a big session with t-cut to smooth out the uneven texture but It will do for now, and cost -£30, so can't complain. Maybe long run I'll replace but for now it's fine.

Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated, and in a twisted way I've quite enjoyed spending the day working on the bike.

I can not understand why some people still think that insurance companies are there to repair damage or reimburse you in the case of theft. Confused

Repairing damage is fair enough (unless you didn't do it, in which case it's 3rd party insurance claim time) but if you've just bought a Ninja H2 and it got robbed, you'd claim, no?

No. It is still a claim and they will skin you to get the cash back. Settle out of insurance.
