So who won't go to certain areas of the UK to have fun on the bike because of what they've heard or experienced of the speed camera situation there?

A lot of folk complain about Wales, but despite being caught once (which I guess isn't much for all the times I've enjoyed myself over there) it doesn't bother me there on the whole.

But yesterday, it was a toss-up between Wales and the Peak District. Last time I did the Peaks, I went with a couple of mates who were local to there, on a weekend, so traffic pretty much kept us slowed down anyway. So this time I thought if I go during the week, there might be a bit less traffic and I can have some fun. Cat n Fiddle was on my planned route, know about the average speed cameras there, so thought I'd be ok on that bit. But then I checked the camera sites on't web, and thought, bugger that, seems like a good place to lose my license!

Was I being silly? (wouldn't be the first time Rolling Eyes Laughing ) Is it all about just knowing the relevant area, knowing what to expect and where?

Cat n Fiddle...

Leave matlock, give it the beans, have a brew at the top, carry on your way.

Assuming the 2nd load of cameras are still placed down the road after the pub.

Cat n fiddle has places to turn off and stop.

For you to average 50mph over it, even if you give it some down the straight clear bits you'll be doing quite well .

Unless you're a maniac, you can do C&F as quick as you like and not really get above the average camera

I've been caught out once in the last 10 years and it was on the A1 up towards Grantham - couple of them tucked away and it was dark and as usual, I was in the Aygo and not the S2000. Thankfully the NIP never arrived Mr. Green

I've only ever been caught speeding in non sporty stuff Sad My last foray into the courts was for well into 3 figures in an HR-V VTEC - the damned things top speed was officially 106 .... *sighs* at least Honda were accurate.

You just have to be on the look out and pay more attention to the changing limits. Like around Woburn / Milton Keynes where they are extending the 30 zones to 40 zones and THEN going to NSL. You just know the police will be waiting to make some coin out of that. Milton Keynes is still a great place to blast around late at night / early in the morning Thumbs Up

As far as traffic police go - not remotely concerned given the dwindling numbers that remain.

I didn't just mean the Cat n Fiddle, but the whole bloody Peak District seems to be saturated with the bloody things (mobile traps, Gatso, Truvelo). Or am I just reading too much into the websites?

Trouble is, if you only go to certain areas occasionally, you don't know what to expect. How many sections is the Cat road divided into as concerns the average speed cameras? Is it just one long thing, or do they measure over parts of it? I've often thought of going past the first camera and stopping for a bit, then carrying on.

Am I wrong about the Peak district as a whole being dodgy as far as all this is concerned?

I'm not talking about the average experience of commuting journeys, but places one would go specifically to have a bit of a blast for the sheer fun - which in my case is just about every time I get on the bike!

That's what 'they' want you to think - to slow you down ... to take the fun out of driving / riding.

The only way around it is to find other roads - the UK is littered with them and they can't afford to put cameras on them all Smile

Or what you do is buy a slower bike and get your kicks at a slower speed?

You are right. The Peaks is a pain now. Blanket 50mph areas despite roads easily capable of faster.

They don't want bikes there and they will win.

A long time ago, I got done for "fraudulent use of no. plate" when I stuck the wrong plate on a bike just for a one-off spin. Back then (about '91) it was just a £50 fine I got. Is it an endorsable offence now?

Where, when?

If it's this weekend the forecast for Buxton aint good, daytime temps are not going to get in double figures and minimum night time temps are hovvering around freezing.

As far as speed cameras go the A6 from Manchester to Buxton is infested with them. Matlock and Darley Dale are infected with them as well. Lots of NSL roads are now 50mph, there are mobile speed traps but their locations are publicised.
Loads of plod hanging around Matlock at the weekends, all roads in are covered.
There are plenty of good roads you can enjoy, unfortunately at the weekends they tend to get clogged up with sluggish cyclists, self righteous ramblers and myopic sightseers doing 20mph and likely to stop in the middle of the road for no reason whatsoever!
The Peak district is a national park, the QUANGO that run it, as their own private fifedom, do not allow fun!
The speed trap regime changes when you cross the border from Derbyshire to Staffs!

Stay away from the "popular" roads, there's a much better road than the Cat and Fiddle, A5004 Buxton to Whaley Bridge!

Northamptonshire is pretty saturated with cameras. Worth taking it steady through there. The A420 between Oxford and Swindon is a nice road but keep your wits about. The A505 has 3 gatsos in a row.

Wiltshire... no fixed cameras Thumbs Up

South Wales I despise, I've given up trying to have fun when there visiting family. Lots of Cameras and plod that enjoy pulling bikes.

Southampton is a bit crap too, no traffic light GP there. Though a lot of theirs do seem to be forward facing Middle Finger Laughing Middle Finger

Aside from a bunch on the A303, I can't ever remember seeing a single camera on any of the country roads. Over the border in Hampshire I've only ever seen the Truvelo (i.e. facing the front of the vehicle) which is handy for the bike...same as in Bedfordshire.

There is no speed camera partnership so no fixed, coppers do run mobile ones occasionally (often 303 between tidworth and Stonehenge and the bulford range road has one there at least weekly). Those ones near Amesbury I think are not on, last I looked they hadn't even repainted the lines after redoing the road. They left a lot of the old fixed ones in place even though were not in use any more, the one in Tidworth only got chopped down when they built a new estate.

Oh and there are those busy body freaks in Shrewton that keep building a fake one, no matter how many times it gets destroyed.

Laughing I'll keep that in mind when I pass through there.

Seen a few of the busybodies in Durrington standing at the side of the road in their hi-vis trying to kid on they're coppers, speed gun and all! I always give them a 'wave', nice bunch.

There's no fixed cameras in North Yorkshire as I know of. It was against there policy to have them a while ago, don't know if it still is. There's the odd mobile police laser speed gun around though.

No, not this weekend. It will be during the week, next time I get the chance with some good weather forecast. Only a one-day raid.
Thanks for the tip-offs for decent roads to ride Thumbs Up

[rant...and disclaimer Laughing]I probably come across here as the most incorrigible speeding lunatic that ever there was, but that ain't the case. I'm just like anyone else with a decent bike - like to have a bit of fun now and again. I choose my times and places carefully generally speaking, am well aware of the dangers, the risk to others etc etc, and try to take all into account. But by feck, with all the complaints of unsolved crime, and the drop in the size of police forces and the monetary constraints they are under (how else are you supposed to view the prevalence of speed cameras with their accompanying resultant fines if not a prop to failing funding?) it's all getting very tiresome.[/rant]

Oxfordshire's roads quickly got boring for me. Not many good ones, and that one in particular I don't find particularly inspiring. The A44 from Oxford to Moreton is much better, and only one camera that I can think of off the top of my head.

Yep, I ride in Wiltshire quite a bit, never seen a fixed camera - they removed them all some time ago I'm told - still got the markings on the roads in a few places. Not even seen a speed trap or mobile unit yet.

South Wales from the northern edge of the Brecons to the south coast as far as I'm aware - not good. Central Wales much better, heart of Snowdonia seemingly not too bad, but surrounding roads can be (especially around Bala and environs).

It makes a big difference that I can visit during the week I think. Less camera activity where mobiles are concerned, less targeting by po-po. Well, quiet roads means less revenue Rolling Eyes

Stay off the really well known parts. Consult local newspaper websites for mobile camera locations. Cat and fiddle purposefully avoided by me because it's massively popular. I'm sure if it was directly en route for me I'd go there, but

Holme moss and woodhead are a riot, spent a lot of last year exploring the areas around penistone. Snake has too much traffic. I probably like tighter, more b-roady and unclassified stuff than fast flowing stuff that you need to be far the other side of the speed limit to enjoy.
