 |
|
Okay so i've just turned 17, I am taking the dive into the world of motorbikes and am in need of help as too what to go for!
The ktm duke 125 was something i like however that is going off looks and the sound as i have been into a dealer to see one. Upon looking at reviews it seems they have quite a few electrical issues, is this something solved after its been fixed the first time or it an ongoing problem?
Any other suggestion of leaner legal bike would be much appreciated,
cheers chaps. ____________________ Only 17 and new to the world of motorbikes. |

Done your CBT yet?
If not no point drooling over stuff you cant ride.
If so.. then what we think of any particular model is pretty irrelevent if none are for sale where you can get to them.... and then, what known problems there may be with any particular model pale into insignificance in the cold light of the actual real UNKNOWN problems that might be lurking in the actual specific example you happen to be contemplating handing over cold cash for.
Dont sweat the small stuff; "Stop thinking - Start riding". Get your boats in line; get the CBT sorted so you can actually go ride ANYTHING.. then go look at what is actually for sale, you could go hand over cash for.. then do your home-work on what looks most promising of that... for most 17 year olds the biggest 'problem' isn't rust or dodgy fuel pumps or reputations for spitting piston-rings; its getting affordable insurance and then not falling off... followed by fixing the damage done when you do..
And top tip? Before worrying about what bike to buy; research what bike LOCK to get... or chances are you wont have bike long. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

3.9k for a KTM Duke 125.. hmm, about that, whatever you do never get a 125 on finance, ever.
Many swear by the Honda CBF as a worthwhile commuter while saving (or as in your case waiting to be 19) to do their direct access to A or A2, probably about £1500-£2000 for a decent second hand one (guesstimate price.. going by average).
New chinese lexmoto Arrow/Vixen OTR for under £1000 if you want something naked and easy to work on with plenty of knowledge, combined with a haynes manual and a basic tool kit you could write the bike off and start all over again 3 times for the price of getting that KTM out of the dealership and have it sit on your driveway.
Also lexmoto do budget end "sporty commuters" such as the Lexmoto ZSF and recently released Venom for £1500 if that's your thing.
Just be aware as a 17 year old (as much as it's ageist and I hate to say it) you walk into a show room and they see innocent and cash signs in their eyes straight away, don't believe their chatter and do your own research on the bike of your desires.
Don't financially cripple yourself trying to make use of that CBT and you'll do just fine, your insurance costs will take care of putting you out of pocket |

I agree with the whole age thing luckily i work in sales myself so i have an idea of the sh*t they come out with!
about the cheaper sort of less known bikes, are they worth looking into or do you think the cost of keeping them up and running due to reliability issues makes it not far from the prices of the likes of ktm and honda etc ! I mean i guess them having reliability issues is just an assumption based on the price however.
Apologies as you can tell i know very little at the moment ____________________ Only 17 and new to the world of motorbikes. |

Not as of yet however i thought id do my homework so ideally i can get straight into riding after the cbt!
thank you the helps much appreciated |
You call it 'home-work'.., I call it prevaricating..... you need to know a lot more, to ride a bike, than how much a new spark-plug & air filter might cost & how often you probably wont buy them.
CBT is designed to teach you the 'basics' of most of what you need to know to 'start' riding on the public road & gives you a chance to have a go.
That done, you should be much better armed with a little know how, to know what 'home-work' is or isn't so worthwhile... and go looking for a bike.
Don't over-think it all, just get on with it!
All you need is your provisional licence, about £120 and the phone number of a school, and you are on your way to being on the road on a bike.... ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Don't be a plonker. It'll be made in China or Taiwan, same as every other Whang Dong brand budget 125.
Mike's got his meds right today. CBT first, security, gear, indicative quotes on insurance, get your budget together in cash, then start looking at what's actually available.
I'd rule out the Duke 125 straight away though. Far, far too expensive for a shoddily made Indian bike with way too many problems, with replaced parts also failing.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=266029
A used YBR, Varadero, CBF or CBR would be the typical candidates, depending on your style preference and size.
Don't rule out Lexmotos; they only import the less troublesome models and have been doing it long enough to know what they're about. New Lexmotos - especially the cheaper ones - aren't a crazy proposition. Good condition used ones can be genuine bargains. The Vixen would be my choice, because it's simple, well supported, robust and cheap.
Don't touch anything that's not got verifiably good parts supply, ideally at www.wemoto.com (or www.cmpo.co.uk if you end up going off-brand). Laugh off any claims that Whang Dong brand dealers can get parts in, no problems mate, massive stock, next day. Might be true, might not, but you don't want to find out the hard way.
Sorry, going a bit Tef here. There are plenty of decent bikes out there, just don't expect more money to equal more quality or reliability on new bikes (post Varadero). ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Also applies to insurance on the 'monthly-plan' too. Its not monthly insurance, its a years policy paid for on a credit agreement.
And leads to an 'all in' budget, not just budget for the bike.
You need;
1/ Provisional Licence (Think it was about £30 I just gave my daughter to get hers) + Photo.. another £5 at the booth in ASDA
2/ Compulsory-Basic-Training course to validate provisional entitlement. typically around £120 ish
3/ Riding Apparel; Helmet, Gloves, 'sensible' footwear; water-proofs and or jacket & trousers. How much is entirely dependent, but a new crash-hat and gloves, and a set of cover-all water-proofs as basics the rest improvised from stuff you already have in your wardrobe or can pillage from elsewhere; you probably 'need' about £100 to get started. And you may consider getting some of that before your CBT if you don't want to be wearing a borrowed helmet!
4/ Locks? As said, get these before you get a bike of you wont have bike long! and don't cheap-skate. good lock and chain, and possibly a ground anchor to tie it down at home; budget at least £30 for lock and chain.
5/ Insurance will depend on the bike you get. For a 17 year old, it wont be cheap regardless. A five year old YBR125 valued at around £1500, third party fire & theft is likely to be in the order of £500 give or take the average wind-speed multiplied by the age in months of the under-writer's granny! Anything newer will be more expensive. Anything more expensive, will be more expensive; anything more 'appealing' will be more expensive. A brand new YZF-R125 is likely to be half the show-room price JUST for the insurance! Anything older, cheaper or less desirable is not likely to be much cheaper!
So, you may have to budget around £500, on stuff before you can even go bike shopping; and most of that will have to be bought cash upfront. Then hold back another £500 to get your insurance, again, cash upfront. THEN you can go looking for a bike.
But remember, that bike will need petrol and oil and other essential maintenance after; and if you are buying 2nd hand you should hold back probably £200 for a new-owner service and to de-niggle any faults you find in early miles. You'll be lucky if a 2nd hand bike doesn't need anything sorting. 125's can be pretty cheap to run; BUT, they ent FREE to run, and remember the risk you'll bend something is high... only thing worse than a bent bike is a bent bike you cant afford to fix!
Add-on-ed
| kiranchauhan wrote: | Probably around 2700 at most really, I'm not looking to buy new as I will be moving up at 19, however it still needs to last me the two years ! |
So, take out £500 to cover up-front costs; and another £500 for insurance, and £200 'reserve' and you have about £1500 to spend on a bike.. that's middle market, where a brand new Lexmoto's competing with a 'young' second hand YBR125, maybe 3-5 years old, or if you are a fashion victim, older, possibly 7-10 year old Veradaro's & CBR's.
You want it to last two years and be easy to live with? I'd say a 3-5 year old YBR125 was your best bet. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Have you considered a Honda Varadero?
No longer made, but I can recommend a good second-hand Fuel Injection model, which you can use daily for a couple of years, and still sell it for about what you paid for it.
Ownership and maintenance costs are negligible, compared to Chinese bikes. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)
