I'm going away in June taking 2 bikes with me on my cars roof.

I need to leave the bikes unattended on the car during part of the journey, approx. 2-3 hours.

The car park should be quite secure due to the location but that means nothing these days. (Car park is Alton Towers)

Having watched videos such as
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Yu4vEsD9WA

It makes me think that I am right to be considering extra security, at the very least I was going to use the cable locks I have to lock the 2 bikes together, would it be worth trying to get one of the cables around a fixed point on the car i.e. wishbone

I think I have a cable long enough, 9.3ms iirc.

Have others been in a similar position? What did you do?

2 bikes were stolen from my work bike shed whilst under the gaze of a CCTV camera. They had some cordless disc cutter and were through the only 2 bikes that had cable locks - very swiftly.

Two things you can take from this, thieves have brass balls and cable locks are not very good against battery powered disc cuttery type things.

edit - pop wheels off and place bikes in the vehicle?

Put the bikes in the car, put a roofbox on the roof with your other stuff in. Because aerodynamics.

Roof of a car is about the worst place you could put a bicycle.

I've not used it myself but saw it on the news last year

https://www.parkbikeworks.co.uk/index.php

It's like a cafe designed for pushbikes but you can also park your bike there.

It's in Derby.

Some interesting tips and thoughts.

So far, I'm thinking of locking them up and removing pedals/seat prior to setting off to make life a little harder for them.

That seasucker thing looks interesting but no more secure imo than looping a cable around part of the car.

Not loads, worth probably as little as £50-100, cost approx. £500 each.

TBH I don't know what 2nd hand bikes are worth as mine tend to be worthless by the time I'm done with them.

I'm probably worrying unnecessarily.

They should be fine on the roof rack.

Lock the frames together and around one of the roof bars, through the wheels as well if you want and I wouldn't bothered taking the seats and pedals off.
