Hi, I'm currently doing car lessons so sold the RS to pay for them. I'm looking for a 125 to use in the meantime. Came across this on ebay, it's not on my insurers database but is rated like a DT.

It's a 2002 plate, 12000 miles, long TNT, 22bhp. The description says the speedo randomly stops working and the bodywork could with repainting as it's been done badly -thoughts? How much do you think it's worth?

2002 plate? I'd be surprised if they did an Elephant 125 on a 92 plate even?

I've looked at these before, and I was led to believe that the engine was not too different from the Early Mito units, but if I remember rightly it does not feature a powervalve like the Freccia/Mito. I'm fairly sure the Elephant was a mid-late 80's bike, and so that's why I think it's very unlikely to be registered in 2002.

I think you will find engine spares not to be too difficult to pick up, compared to how hard it will be to find spare or new plastics, bodywork and cycle parts.

With that in mind I'd not want to pay more than £500 even if it was a very tidy bike, which few will be by now.

I'd be checking availability of exhaust parts before shedding any cash on that thing.

Based on the pictures I'd offer £250 and not pay more than £350. I remember reading about them when I was still on my CBT (Doesn't mean I remember much). Still, at the right price I would take a gamble, not like it's an unheard of manufacturer Thumbs Up

The seller's asking £600!

Apparently startrights in Leeds valued it between 600 - 700!

If that's the actual bike it's just project fodder or a cheap ride and dispose job. As Nexus Icon said if the exhaust is rotten then you could be a bit fucked. I remember Cagiva Geezer having a lot of trouble trying to find a spare expansion chamber for his Supercity 125 which is a more recent bike than the Elephant. The silencer isn't so much of a problem as making something else fit is a possibility. getting another front pipe off a different 125 to fit is going to be much harder though.

Offer £250-300 and be prepared to walk away otherwise. At that cash it could be reasonable as a long term project if you have time patience and money. But if your just going to ride it and sell it on again, then who is going to pay anything for an 80's bike that hasn't had decent parts availability for years. If it was a DT125R in the same condition, it would be no worries, as you could literary fall over DT spares, but an old Italian 125 that was only made for a few years, well you've got to want to make life very hard for yourself!

Meh, point out the oil at the bottom of the stanchions, the rusty spanny, the damaged bash plate, faulty speedo, tatty plastics, missing panal, questionable registration... blah blah....

If a shop wants to give them that much then more fool them!

Besides it is currently going for £70 on ebay.

Also production ended in 1990, my guess is the registration is the import date?

Walk away. That spanny looks like it's just about ready to disintegrate, and you're not going to be able to track down a replacement one easily.

Also check the wheels well for rust, my TDR250 was a similar vintage and the wheels were unusable, had to swap in some TZR wheels.

If the speedo randomly stops working then it's probably done more than 12k Thinking

Hi

Think it went out of production around 1990, but they also sold a mildly changed version as the N90 after that.

However entirely possible it was first registered in 2002. The 125s were fashion items to a large extent and when they were replaced they were worth far less. At least one guy bought up large numbers of new bikes and then just left them in a warehouse, and some of those were imported new about 10 years ago. Some of these new bikes that were imported we made in the mid 1980s.

Oh, and the claimed power back then was 22kW, which is about 31hp.

All the best

Keith
