Hi all,

So my laptop is on it's way out good and proper!

Its only an i3, windows 7 with a basic graphics card, 4GB RAM and 320GB Hard drive.

Somehow, it's lasted me over 4 years of constant abuse everyday, use of 2D and 3D (Sketchup) programs, so I really cannot complain!

Every now and again it goes SUPER slow, mouse is lagging etc, cant open a word document.. crashes.. etc.

Now, I don't really know what to look for as it seems everything is constantly changing and updating!

How much roughly will I need to spend for a decent spec machine? I'd like something out of the box as it were.

Will i5 be ok rather than i7?

Say I have a budget of £800, would I get a better PC or equally as good laptop? I think I'd rather have a laptop, but if the PC is much better it would make sense just to get one.

Sorry if this post is all over place, it's come at just the wrong time!

I will do some research in the meantime!!

Cheers,
Tom

Thumbs Up

For £800 I'd be tempted to get this:

https://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-17-7746-laptop/pd?oc=cn74604&model_id=inspiron-17-7746-laptop

- Aluminium body
- 17 inch LED Touch Display
- i7 Processor
- 1TB Hard Drive
- Nvidia Geforce Graphics Card

It's a beast. I use a 2 year old Dell for work and it's running flat out for 8 hours every single day and gets thrown about and abused and I've never had a single problem with it.

Hi bikertomm,

First off yes you will get a better Desktop for £800 than you would laptop.

Do you need portability, if you do then laptop it is.

Once you answer the portability part then we can help some more Smile Thumbs Up

I don't know if I need portability or not. Laughing

How much better would a desktop be?

I suppose I'm thinking laptop just for future proofing myself incase I do need to ever take it somewhere for work or whatever.

Thanks Thumbs Up

Thanks guys,

No gaming I highly doubt, other than a bit of minecraft possibly!

From looking into it, it seems I can get a half decent laptop for around £500.

These usually have:

Windows 8

Intel i5 (around 2.2GHz, 3MB cache if this means anything)

8GB DDR3 RAM

1TB Hard-drives (What's a SATA hard drive, just the make?)

And somekind of graphics card, like a 'Nvidia GE Force 820/830/840M'
These have a 'dedicated' '2GB DDR3'

Found a HP that was £630 now £530, 17" HD screen backlit keyboard, beats speakers ect with above spec.

My question is now this, do I get one of them and be done with it, Arrow is it better to get a decent looking i5 laptop with a spec like the above,

OR,

Arrow Find an i7 laptop with similar spec for say £600-£700?

Cheers. Thumbs Up
