This is about as newbie as it gets. I have a 09 Street Triple. Love it, everything is great. Now, I have noticed it makes distinctive whining noise.

Two questions, one, what is it that makes this noise and two is it a negative thing that may get worse? Thumbs Up

Surely you mean a "winning" noise? Cool .

Means the engines toast along with the frame. The bike's scrap now. I'll give you £100 for it and you're lucky I'm not billing you for it.

Tried looking on YouTube for videos of STs running and seeing if it sounds like yours?

It's the distinctive triple 'whirr' I'll guess. They all do that, sir.

Whining how? Like when you go in reverse in a car? That's your engine telling you: ,,Stop being paranoid!'' Tut Tut

Let me guess, it came with the factory exhaust system, which only means the noise from the engine itself is louder than the exhaust system. Buy an open exhaust system and I guarantee there will be no more whining from the engine, well you won't hear it. Thumbs Up

You would not believe how loudly most of the Honda engines whine at idle and low revs, even with open exhaust systems. Thumbs Up

And I could go on,

That's never whining, it's more like a growl, the sound is dirty compared to an conventional in-line four.

I dunno - I prefer a triple. Sure in-line fours sound good.... always liked the sound of a 3 cylinder though.

I'm not saying it is wrong, I was just describing the sound of an in-line triple. Thumbs Up

Mine makes all sorts of noises, whines, rattles and so on. But it also sounds awesome. Buy a loud exhaust and forget it.

Its because Triumph used straight cut gears to run the balance shaft rather than a helical gear set.

Perfectly normal.

Out of interest - is the MT the same? Because that whines like a triumph but i thought it was a triple thing.

The entire gearbox use straight cut gears too, as do most makes and models.

Could have something to do with the firing order as well.
