Hello guys,

I apologise if this question has already been brought up on this forum. I couldn't find my answer with the search function.

I've been riding on my Yamaha MT-07 (35kW restricted) for around 18 months now on an A2 licence. I'll be looking to take my test for the A licence in November. I'm pretty confident in my abilities to ride safely on the streets and don't want to be forking out on a hire bike and an instructor to take me to the test centre.

My question is how would the test centre/examiner possibly know that my bike is restricted? Can I not just turn up and do the test on my current bike, then go off and get the restrictor removed should I pass?

There must have been others in my situation? What did you all do?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Very Happy

You can't ride unrestricted bike before the test. And can't take the A test on restricted bike.

How the examiner will know? He will ask you. If you say the bike is restricted you can't do the test. If you say it is unrestricted you will fail, because they may have seen you coming on it.

You can turn up on trailer with unrestricted bike or get a friend to ride it to the test center. The bike must have L plates. And the instructor will ask you for valid insurance.

You will need to sort out the A unrestricted bike insurance which can be tricky, because it will need L plates as well. I am not sure this is even possible, but you can ask your insurer and let us know.

Ask them you want valid insurance in your name for unrestricted bike with L plates in order to go on and ride it on a test only for getting your A license.

This question has been asked zillion times. It is possible. I have not seen anybody to actually do it, probably because of the insurance issue.

Oh, please. If BodyGuard can figure it out, anyone can.

Don't volunteer any more information than necessary.

If the examiner asks, say that it's full power.

If he asks how you got it there, you can say:

Arrow Mate rode it in, he'll be back later if I fail.
Arrow Rock up on the bike early, fiddle under the seat. "Rode it in restricted, just removed the ECU restrictor / throttle stop."

Any questions about insurance, just say that it's insured. You're not required to show any evidence. If pressed (you won't be) feel free to say you've asked your insurance and they said that as long as you're riding in accordance with your license (i.e. full power while on test) then it's fine.

Heck, depending on how it's restricted, you might even be able to actually derestrict it in a few minutes. Hopefully you know how.

Aside, make sure that you're displaying L plates front and rear. You're not required to wear hi-vis but the examiner might not know that and will certainly be used to trainees wearing it, so a £1 shop dayglo bib will be to your advantage.

Best of luck!
