Should we have a new member introduction area?

Isn't it about time we had one?

It gets a bit boring having the "traditional" BCF welcoming committee for every single new poster (and it's corresponding Pavlovian response from people like me ... )

I know there's a whole "New to riding" section, but it's stupid to expect people who have ridden for years and only just found BCF, or who have just returned to riding, to post in there - and the whole "this person is clearly not up to our standards" thing is getting a bit tedious. If they are not BCF quality material, they will soo fuck off when they discover what cunts we are.

But if we gave them a chance to wipe their feet as they arrived, we might be able to weed to dags out, or at the very least know which ones to put on ignore - regardless of whether you like having "a bit of sport" with them or not.

Opinions are like arseholes: BCF is full of them, or something Mr. Green Middle Finger

Go.

I know, I know.

I put it here cos it might get more views than if it was in "Forum Feedback and Help" or RB.

I use a welcome forum as an addition to other anti spam measures.

All new users have to post in the welcome before their new user status is removed and being able to post on other parts of the forum.

But I also agree with hellcat's reasons.

Personally I just joined BCF, dealt with a couple of Teflon Mike essays and that was it.

Do some people actually get given a hard time when joining? Is it a common thing? Did it happen to me and did I just not notice Laughing ?

Well it's not even all about that really.

Surprisingly, people start here and expect to find such a thread/forum. I've seen a number of posts where people decide to introduce themselves and claim to have been uncertain where best to do so.

Although how they would be directed to such a place ... I have to admit, I have no idea (and possibly care less).

People seem inclined to seek out such a place on forums these days.

When the forum first started we basically figured that introductions were for loser forums like Visordown. I don't think much has changed really. If you want to make a splash, post something interesting or exciting, don't say "Hi, virtual drinks on me!". It's so freaking boring. The one advantage of having an 'introduction forum' is that I wouldn't have to read the introduction threads, but then that's not fair on people who would feel compelled to do so in the correct forum.

In short, it's a silly idea, and if we needed it we'd have it by now.

Oh, right, that would be back in the day when BCF was small and there were probably fewer losers here than there are now... Rolling Eyes

What about just a thread, then? Pinned up somewhere (I don't care where)

Cos I have to admit, I'd probably not visit a whole forum just to see who was new this week, with all that "oh hello, welcome" nicely-stuff. Cos I'm not such a sociable animal that I want to greet every single new person unless they are particularly interesting to me. I'm very "oh yeah, alright, a new person..."

But I'd go to a designated-new-persons-place to check on anyone who caught my eye, and to see if they had posted anything about themselves in such an introductory thread.

Nobody needs to be compelled to respond to every single new post. Just if they are interesting individually.

Although yeah, I agree on the virtual drinks thing: an old and tired forum tactic, whose humour wore off about the same time as greetings which advise noobs that "we're all mad here, you'll fit right in!" Rolling Eyes

So basically you want to stalk/retroactively vet anyone who stands out? You know the Germans did that in the 1930s and the Russians throughout the cold war... Wink

Good point, Clangs.

Still ... I'd not be using it as a pulling thread, mainly cos I would never instigate a forum romance*, and also cos I am currently all husbanded-up anyway. No sign, this week at least, of the Beefcake relinquishing his fairly firm grasp upon my wrist *contented little sigh*

Got to admit, I'd be more likely to use such a thread as a sort of "sift the nutters" type of convenience: notice someone new online, see if they have posted an introduction post - and count the number of exclamation marks they use in their introduction.

*All those chaps I chat up online, they're perfectly safe, really Wink I'd never get seriously involved with someone I knew from a forum, once bitten, twice shy etc.
