Currently, my bike is fitted with a Shimano Claris gearset (apart from god-awful Tektro brakes), and I would like to upgrade this gearset.

The plan is to go to a complete Shimano 105 5800 gearset with a Shimano RS010 wheelset.

This is the same spec as the highest spec version of my frame the factory (apart from the factory supply Tektro brakes still Sad ), so same spec as highest factory one, plus improved brakes, and works out £120 cheaper!

I am happy to do all the work myself, but don't want to be bothered with multiple orders so will order any special tools at the same time.

https://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-105-5800-groupset/
https://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-rs010-clincher-road-wheelset/

That is what I will be fitting, it includes a bottom bracket. Do I need to swap this to use that chainset? Or is it compatible with the already fitted FSA Tempo bottom bracket?

tl;dr
Do I need to change to the Shimano Bottom Bracket?
Can I unwrap the existing bar tape and reapply it? Or do I need to buy new and wrap the whole thing again?
What SPECIALIST CYCLE tools do I need to:
    Change Cassette?
    Change Bottom Bracket?
    Change Chainset?

Thanks Smile

Existing BB will be an octalink (if the internet is correct)
105 is a hollowtech II style, so yes, you'll need to swap it out.

If you were buying the groupset and wheels at the same time you could ask them to fit the cassette on the wheel? Otherwise a cassette tool is required.

To get the old chainset/BB out you'll need a traditional cartridge BB tool and an octalink (or universal tool) crank puller.

To fit the new one you'll need an external BB tool.

You can reuse bar wrap, you'll just need new end tape to hold it down. You may end up with weird patterns from re-wrapping it. "can" as in you can also wash out an old condom and re-use it..

If you're thinking about scrimping on that, consider dropping down to Tiagra as its about the same really and will free up some cash for tools/ finishing touches. I was running 105 shifters & rear mech, with everything else tiagra.

You will also need a chain tool and decent wire/ cable cutters.

Bar tape can sometimes be reapplied, I wouldn't bother personally it's only ~£10 replace it.

Bottom bracket depends, I'm gonna guess the existing one is a Square taper and the new one is hollowtech. In which case you will need to swap it out. If you remove the crank and the old BB is the same I'd leave it and keep the new on as a spare. You'll easily be able to tell if it will work.

As for tools buy a decent tool kit, I have this one and have used it for years.

That has everything you'll need.

Changing cassette you'll need a chain whip and a cassette tool (both included in that tool kit) However putting on onto new wheels has you will be doing you only need the cassette tool.

Changing the bottom bracket you'll need the right tool for the specific BB you have Square taper is a notched socket hollowtech is a spanner. (both included in that tool kit)

You'll also need a crank puller to get square taper cranks off or an allen key and the hollowtech cap removal tool (both included in that tool kit)

It's not scrimping. It's my ability to wrap the whole bar neatly Very Happy

Scratch the idea of partially unwrapping anyway, it appears you need to have the bar pretty much bare to fit the new levers anyway.

The only thing that is a bit of a pain in the arse is indexing the gears. The rest is pretty straight forward if you have the tools. However there are plenty of videos on youtube to show you how to index them so watch rinse and repeat.

You can definitely re-use the bar tape if you are careful taking it off. But fresh bar tape always feels good. Unless you just put a new one on a week ago. In that case carefully take it off and it should be fine going back on.

Claris BB will definitely be either splined or square taper. Claris actually does not have a chainset as a part of the groupset so it could be any of the shimano propreitary ones. Crank puller and the right BB tool needed. New ht2 cranksets are much easier to install and remove.

The rest is just plug and play. Thumbs Up
