thought id give it a go, normally get kev or G to supervise/do it for me Razz but growing and all that, it was time to attempt something myself....

....and i shouldnt have bothered Laughing net achievement, a big mess, and a few important bolts missing, and nothing actually 'fixed'

feel free to return to the main forum, this may be a long post

the targets were:
Arrow remove wheel and change warped brake disc
Arrow fit bar internails + end weights (a pet hate of mine is bikes without them) sounds simple, but is anything but

https://www.iwantapc.co.uk/Bar_Ends.AVI what idiot came up with that design? i ask you? once its in, its never coming out again, and its just shite

first off, remove wheel, undid pinch bolts, removed one caliper, and undid axle bolt, all bolts were old and rounded, so recently purchased wall drive sockets were the order of the day Cool a quick run to the computer to ask korn what the holes in one end of the axle were for, and we are back on track, a bit of cursing, twisting and shouting, and the axle is off and the wheel is out, winner Very Happy

https://www.giffould.com/gallery/albums/userpics/Wheel%20Out.JPG

next ask, change the brake disc, the old one came off easy, 6 nuts, off they came, i acquired a replacement disc from a guy off greybike, and pattern titanium disc bolts from tasty nuts

offered up new disc, put bolts in place, tightened them in a criss cross pattern, in accordance with haynes Wink , picked up torque wrench, noted torque was 20NM required and minimum range on my wrench is 40, oh well, undid it all the way, and estimated it was around 25, *snap*, *snap* "FUCK!", there go two heads off the very cheap and skanky tasty nuts, avoid there titanium range in future, note made, obsenity uttered, that job stops dead Razz

https://www.giffould.com/gallery/albums/userpics/Bolts%20I%20Fucked%7E0.JPG

next up, bar internals, thought it best to get the bars off the bike, as getting all the crap into the bars with bars in place didnt look fun, so 10 mins of tinkering, and all the switchgear is off, and dangling randomly inside the nose fairing, top yoke needs to come off, noted the 30mm socket required and was very glad i bought one earlier today just to complete my collection Wink

attempted to undo yoke bolt, realised the whole steering column was within mm of twisting itself off the front paddock stand, arse, so re-installed the wheel with nackered bolts, 20 mins of cursing about spacers dropping out, and calipers getting in the way, and the human species being a hand short, and the wheel is back in, looks crooked in relation to the mudguard, but i dont care cos i wont be riding it anywhere till the disk is sorted

top yoke now has resistance to the undo-ing motion, and off comes the yoke bolt (unfortunately the jerk sends many bolts and tools flying that were balanced on the air box, some never to be seen again, arse Evil or Very Mad lesson learned about that one, all bolts and tools are now resigned to the floor) top yoke looks free, but there is a definate lack of movement, a trip to dads bad boy tool box, sources a big fuck off wooden mallet, and the non moving top yoke is soon persuaded Thumbs Up Cool nice mess

https://www.giffould.com/gallery/albums/userpics/Yoke%20Off.JPG

bar internals weights faffing ensues, much annoyance, and the cake was iced when the "official honda bar end screws" cross thread in the "official honda threaded bar internal weight" one of my bars already had the internals in it (see vid) but it looks totally wrong compared with standard honda, and the bar end just spins on the end which is annoying, but i cant figure out a way of removal, as i dont have a clamp point to hold the bar in place, while i yank at the internals with mole grips, and so ends that job Thumbs Down

down tools for the day, as light is fading, and we feel enough cock ups have been made, and temper is frayed somewhat Confused

https://www.giffould.com/gallery/albums/userpics/What%20A%20Mess.JPG

https://www.giffould.com/gallery/albums/userpics/Down%20Tools.JPG

felt like ive learnt a lot, and cant believe i paid a shop to install my bars, since it was a 10 min job Razz

lessons for future:
Arrow dont balance tools or nuts on the bike, cos they disappear Razz
Arrow dont overtighten bolts Rolling Eyes and get a more accurate torque wrench (purchased an hour later 50 quid from halfords, 8-60Nm far more useful)
Arrow always get your older more knowledgeable mates to do jobs for you

not going anywhere tonight, thanks to being technically bikeless, but will be having a few well earned beverages Razz

new forks and subframe arrive later in the week, so more fun awaits me Confused Thumbs Up

and if anyone is interested, this tool kit from demon tweeks...
https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/catalogue/product_detail.asp?PCODE=SEAAK275&GRP=MCP066&PGRP=MC008&CLS=MCYCLE&from=search

...is top line, wall drive sockets 6-24, and plenty of extra's like allen key sockets, screw driver bits, extension bars etc, ignore the pic cos its wrong, but its definately a recommended set, will cover most jobs

thanks for reading Mr. Green

sounded like me this morning

Carbs off... good clean and then reasemble. how wrong was I??

kept droping screws, bolts, nuts and washers down between the starter motor and the engine, what a bitch to get out, I ended up taking most panels and covers off the engine just to get one bolt and to cut it short i tried starting it when done. check fuel, ok battery, ok. the bugger just wouldnt start so anyway looking around and noticed that just before i put the carb bank back on i undone the vacum screws on the intake tracks for balencing when done and i tried starting it with out the screws in..... How thick am I?

anyway my excitment for the day is done Thumbs Up

My suggestion is that we take Gooses tools away from him - before he breaks something else Smile

Seriously Goose, the more you work on your bike, the more confident you will become and the less mistakes you will make.

Good post too Cool

Yer dont fret. Ive had plenty of bolts break on me, trust...

Luckely, so-far there always seemed to be a fix. Seems like everytime i take it apart, i have to bodge it back together, and it gets progressivly worse every time. Wink Laughing

Although it is bloody annoying, especially the importmant bolts! O and the work always takes way longer than you imagine/expect.

The bloody fuse box took half an hour to take off, because there were stones jammed in the release clip (didnt know untill i realied). Had to take the all side fairings off as well. Hassle, but worth it when the bike runs sweet again.

Its true about the more you work, the less mistakes you make. Thumbs Up

First rule of spannering - multiply all time estimates by 3, sometimes 5

Second rule - collect sweetcorn and tomato tins to put nuts and bolts in, Tupperware is good too.

Third rule - its a learning experience, if it all starts going pear shaped, back off, go for a cuppa (and a smoke if you do), come back in an hour.

Fourth rule- Never reach for the hammer unless totally calm.
