First post for me but been lurking a while, hello everyone. Failed my mod 1 today on the figure 8, comfort dab that was just a bit more comfortable than is allowable. Annoyed with myself as everything else was fine (or close enough, 49 on the emergency stop and 53 on the swerve).

Ah well, a little more speed next time and hopefully I won't do the same again.

Hello, Go get it next time Thumbs Up

Edit: to add some input, always paranoid about this as I'm a novice myself and don't want to give wrong advice. But did get MOD 1 first time with 0 minors.

Keep revs constant high, don't worry about the noise if revs are 1.5k above what you would normally consider.
Hold on clutch bite point to preferred speed of bike, control that speed with the back brake as your nervous clutch hand battles to maintain correct bite point. Relax, try not to hold bars tight. look as far around the cones as possible. Do not go near front brake. do not come off throttle at all! If your nervous throttle hand does shake and revs drop slightly then you'll be glad you were revving a little bit high to begin with.

Edited because cannae speel or gramer right. Really should review before hit post sometimes Smile

It was all in the 'look where you want the bike to go' bit for me. It really works, look right round over your shoulder and you'll get round it easily. Good luck for next time.

I passed on my 2nd attempt, per chance are you testing in Wakefield?

My figure of 8 was rubbish on that too but because of the awful wind and rain, I got the pity vote.

BUT I was told, "you can go as wide as you want, just don't hit any of the other cones."

Yup, out at Silkwood. Training wuth Bumpy who I find excellent. CBT was with a different company who I won't name but shouting "Stop wanking the fucking throttle" at some poor bugger also having difficulties with a figure of 8 didn't feel particularly consttuctive.

I just needed to be slightly faster, revs were too low, pulled in the clutch a little and that was the end of my balance. Half a second but it was enough Sad

I passed my figure of 8 mainly because my lessons for it were during torrential rain. The instructors taught me to trust the bike wasn't going to slip and drop so when I did the test in the dry it was cake.

You like riding in the rain!

Eh, it's easy enough to do. It's a silly performing seal exercise anyway - you didn't drop the bike, it would have been zero drama on the road.

Maybe balance a ball on your nose next time.

I am quite partial to riding in the rain. It rained everyday, I think, during all my training and including test, which had ice patches on the road. Also never tempted in the slightest to twist the throttle too far in the rain. As long as wearing correct gear I find rain riding therapeutic.

In the dry, little bad guy on my shoulder prodding me get 10k revs smile on face. Not good.

Guilty as charged.

As I've already said, it's a bullshit test but once it's out of the way you'll wonder what the fuss was.

The figure of 8 and U-turn are headspace things, you need to mentally accept that this is something you can do otherwise the temptation is there to look down or dab a foot.

Keep telling yourself "Head up, look round" and you will get it eventually Thumbs Up

I made a similar foot down mistake for my Mod 1. I'd practised the figure of 8. I'd practised the the slalom. What I didn't practise is them both together and on the actual test I starting looking at the last yellow cone and and the first blue one and at that moment I dabbed the foot down. I instantly knew that it was all over and It's a gutting feeling.

I had my second Mod 1 booked for this morning, got about 10 minutes away (33 mile drive) and got a phone call to say it was cancelled due to bad weather Sad

You will get it next time for sure.

I failed mod 1 first time on figure of 8 also, but I dropped the bike completely. Wasn't concentrating enough, too busy worrying about the U turn coming up! Held my hands in the air and yelled a profanity.

Got it second time round with no minors.

'Held my hands in the air and yelled a profanity' made me laugh visualising the scenario. That must have been awful feeling dropping the bike. Glad you got it now Smile

I was absolutely sure I would fail on the figure of 8 on both of my attempts. Aced it twice!

Attempt 1 I got no minors but a serious for stopping past the line on the controlled stop. Yes you read that right, I failed the controlled stop.

My instructor hadn't had anyone fail on that in 6 years of teaching! At least I'm in the history books ehh. Laughing

The trick really is to keep your head up and look where you want to go, once you get used to doing that, every thing else comes naturally. People kept telling me that but I shrugged it off thinking it was just good practice rather than actually being essential to riding well. As soon as I started focusing on that I had no problems with any of the manouvers, good luck next time chap! Thumbs Up

It was so frustrating because I had never had a problem with figure of 8, even done a training session on the actual test ground with no problems.

My heart sank and I just had a real "F*ck my life" feeling!

Examiner came over to me and shrugged his shoulders and said "Do you want to carry on or...?" Which made me feel worse, for some reason I thought if I do well in the rest he might turn a blind eye, but once he said that I realized how naive and stupid I was being.

Went back in the test center and found it hard to speak because I felt like bursting into tears with frustration!

Doesn't help having my bike at home in the conservatory just waiting for me to pass so I can ride, doesn't half put the pressure on!

It's all behind me now though, Mod 2 on Friday Very Happy

It was comically easy on a Vespa 100, with 10" wheels.

Can someone please explain what you are meant to do in the test for the figure of eight? Just keep going round and round until they say stop or something?

Welcome, unlucky, but don't get worked up about it.

Just try to get more confident doing them before next time.

Control your speed using your clutch and rear brake. Keep the revs fairly high and slip the clutch. Use your rear brake to keep the turns tighter though, and don't let the speed or power wash off... as soon as you do that it'll start to lurch and thats when it gets much harder to control and tempting to put feet down.

Good luck for next time.

I think the requirement is a minimum of two complete figure 8's but you continue until the examiner says enough is enough. Obviously if you start getting shakier as you progress he might torture you with an extra lap to see if you can hold it together Middle Finger

Examiner at scunthorpe kept making go round again gestures so I ended up doing about 8 circuits. Turns out he wanted me in a very specific place to start the slow ride because it wouldn't be fair to make me ride further or in a curve.

You can go between the last two cones of the slalom if you need to be wide. helps if doing mod one on something with a barge-like turning circle. Look where you want to go, not at the cones. Embarassed

Thanks for that. Sounds ridiculous.

I have never even attempted that on my CBR Laughing
