I'm buying a Gilera DNA 50cc tomorrow and I'm planning on getting about a bit on it. I live in Manchester but have a friend in Wakefield (yorkshire), which is roughly 36 miles away or just over an hours drive avoiding motorways. I know that 2 strokes don't cope well with long distances, so I was wondering would this journey damage my bike? Also, I'd be making the journey there and back at least once a week. Please help if you can. Thanks

Shouldn't be a problem. It might take and hour to drive but remember your 50cc will only do 30mph so it'll take a bit longer. As long as you make sure it's got two stroke oil in it there won't be any problems really. Obviously putting more miles onto it will mean it needs servicing more often but as long as you look after it you shouldn't encounter any problems really. Thumbs Up

Well the bike is an 03 plate and has done less than 2000 miles, so it's in pretty good nick, plus I know its been well looked after so far. Is 36 miles that far really for a journey in your opinion? Also since its an almost new bike i've no need to take it for a service until next year, is that right?

I would say that will be okay distance for it. You will need to have it serviced before next year. Servicing is done at milage intervals, not time. I don't know what the intervals are on the DNA50 but it should have had at least it's first service by now I would expect. Speak with the dealer to find out what the service intervals are. Thumbs Up

30 miles it should be fine, the bike would go allot further.. just make sure everything is working and maintained, perhaps give it and yourself a rest, rideing with aches and pains is distracting and dangerous.

Just stick to minor roads, if you aquire a big que of annoyed road users behind you try to pull in to let them pass when its safe (like a layby) personally i'd go through the peaks, great roads not allot of traffic, defenately more fun than rideing through busy towns Wink (not so much fun when its snowing for future reference)

I'd reccomend you get yourself some basic aa breakdown cover, even the most sturdy well maintained bike can run out of petrol, have a flat tyre, drive chain/belt can snap, 50ccs are still not allot of fun to push home! its only something like £30 and well worth it.

I did 120 miles in a day on a honda c90 with a pillion a few years ago.

I know its not a 2 stroke but it just goes to show small bikes can do the miles.

My 50cc derbi has done over 150km (about 95 miles) in a day, just take it steady and don't redline it everywhere and its fine.

Oh and decent 2t oil is a must. Very Happy

Cheers people. Zero, is that 30 a month or for the year? I hadn't thought of anything like that, thanks.

Did Brighton to Telford 5 times on a Suzuki TS50 and twice on a KE125 both 2 strokes, ok that's 240 miles each way avoiding motorways about 7 hour each way journey times. And the only problems i had were :- 1 x blown headlamp bulb (TS50) 1 X broken clutch cable (KE125). Why did i do it? Easy the love of a woman! Rolling Eyes

Not very relivant, but I did about 120 miles on my 4-Stroke GN125 the other day. Don't quite know how because I didn't leave Southampton/The New Forest - was just riding for pleasure, practice and to learn the roads near to the university so I could get around quick while on a project at the Nuffield. Had no problems and my arse was not even sore, would do it again!

Piaggio/Gilera 2 strokes are quite good at putting in distances reliably. I once did Watford to Waterloo (london), a distance of roughly 30 miles in about 1 hr on dual carraigeways and city traffic. It managed it on a half tank and very little issues invovled. I'm pretty sure that the DNA will manage. Oh, my bike WAS an NRG Extreme '00 model which was standard (not deristricted), but chopping in for a CBR (please, no lectures about how duff they are compared to 2 strokes please! Razz Razz Very Happy ). Have fun with your DNA!

A friend went from derby to wales TWICE in one day on an nsr 125 highly tuned it was too, no problems...

The aa's cheepest cover is £42 this will get you to a garrage or home whichever is nearest, if your at a garrage then your going to be near civilisation, if its the middle of the night then it would have to be a pritty hard faced git to leave you at a closed garrage... apparently in the majority of cases they will take you home...

I did arround 220 miles on my old cg125, not allot of fun and very hard work, butit would have coped with allot more mileage if i had wanted...
The only other significan distance i did was to leeds festival, 120miles there then the same back, it was orrible, so i guess it depends allot on the roads your on...

If you really do some serious miles on a smaller bike then haveing as little traffic about as possible will make your life 100% easyer, so get up at 3am it gets light at 4 and theres almost nothing on the roads Smile

When you go looking for breakdown cover, make sure you take up the Relay option, as TBH the membership is a waste without it.

We're recovering alot of people at the moment who haven't taken it up and you'd be amazed at how expensive it can be to go a relatively short distance. To give you an idea on a 35 mile recovery, we charge two way mileage making it 70 miles at £1.20 a mile you'd be looking at £84!

Just thought I'd mention it!! Laughing

There is no good reason why a 2-stroke can't do long distances. If it breaks down then there is something wrong with it and it would have done so sooner or later anyway.

I used to take my jawa all round the country and regularly used to do the 240 miles to and from my parents house when I was at college.

My mate did over 1000 miles on his Honda H100 on our summer run this year, never missed a beat.

lol this post has just reminded me of something my dad told me once,

about 20 years ago his friend had a puch maxi moped, did a journy of 50 odd miles and used 5 spark plugs! lol

in reply to your question though, for a 50cc 36 miles is not really alot to you but it will seem it to the traffic behind you,

please dont take that comment the wrong way,

i myself started on a 50cc honda melody deluxe when i was 16 (7 years ago)

i used to do trips of about 20 miles (there and back) it was horrible, cars packing up behind you, beeping at you, trying to overtake when cars coming the other way etc.

its not a nice feeling,me personally i love scooters but they are best for towns where they are in there element.just not suited for the open roads,

but overall you will be fine reliabuility wise but with all two strokes there is the chance of it going bang (former rs125 owner) eventually.

SInce we're on the subject of mileage, After how many miles should I service my Honda NSR? I've already done 1500 miles in a month and a bit!

By the way I did a round trip from York to Boro and the bike was fine.. the finakl journey was well over 100 miles. I reckon you can go as far as you want as long as you refuel with oil n petrol and the bikes in working nic!

Cheers
Craig
