Do you change the oil filter every oil change?

According to Yamaha the oil filter should be changed every other oil change on the Fazer which I plan on doing so besides they are £8.39 from the local rip off shop if I want one right now.

Now I know they aren't expensive from eBay but when you rack up 4K in a matter of three months it seems like a waste of money if it will last 8K.

What do you do and why?

They're cheap enough so yeah, every time. I forgot last time so I will be changing the oil sooner than usual this time around. I suggest taking apart an oil filter and having a look at the crap it catches between the layers.

I aim to do mine every 8k and the oil every 4k, that said I usually forget when I last did it and err on the side of caution so it's possible it's gotten a fresh oil and filter at 3k more than once

I suppose it depends on whether or not you see anything wrong with pumping fresh clean oil through a dirty filter.

Also, if you don't change the filter every time, you aren't changing all of the oil, as up to 1/2 litre of the old dirty oil will remain in the filter.

Most of my oil goes out of my exhaust so I don't bother doing oil changes.

i have to do 2 filters and clean another every 3k miles, (but do them every 2k miles)
so i wouldnt be complaining about doing 1 every 4000.

i order my filters in bulk, so i always have filters to hand and get them cheaper from an online shop rather than from a real life store,

just be more prepared, for all the extra effort and cost, id do it every time,
you still have to remove your old filter anyway to get the old oil out,
so why not just replace it

Yes, or you'd be mixing fresh oil with a decent quantity of shit. If yam say oil 8k and filter 16k, its a fair assumption that doing both together you can safely do 10k. Especially if you use decent oil.

Cbr6 interval is 8k, I use better oil, sometimes wait till 10k. Then the oil is kept and either goes in the 125 and changed often, 1k intervals... (though thats been off the road a while now) or on chain. Old oil still a decent red colour, not black.

I did 6,400 miles without the oil filter on the GPz I had. The previous owner said he did the oil and filter change, so I didn't touch it. After 3,200 I changed the oil, the manual said the filter could do 2 oil changes, so I didn't check. When I drained the oil, it was clean, no metal bits, so I guess an old 80's air cooled engine can run with no oil filter.

I was young, inexperienced and couldn't find an oil filter. Now the local shops are full of those parts and I kind of regret selling my motorcycle only because I couldn't find spare parts.

didnt yamaha extend the service interval to 6k in 2001 on the fazer without changing anything on the bike.
personally i do filter change at the same time as oil.
its a couple of quid and isnt going to hurt anything.

My Divvy has the same service requirement - 4000 mile oil changes, 8000 mile filter. That means changing the oil every 6-8 weeks. To be honest, the fiver or so it costs for the filter pales into insignificance compared to the rest of the running costs (petrol, tyres, bacon butties at coffee stops etc.), and if I've got myself dirty doing an oil change then doing the filter takes a few seconds more. Therefore I change it every time (except once, when I didn't have one to hand so did the next oil change early).

Doing a relatively high mileage, I keep a stock of consumables - so have filters, plugs and pads all waiting to go on. That way I can buy online at good prices and not have to wait for delivery when I actually need them.

My msx oil goes light brown after 500 miles, and still isn't black when I drain it out after 800.

I always use halfords 5w30 fully synthetic which I buy in bulk in the January sales.

I do, because it's cheap. I pay 4x more for the oil.

I change them every 3k miles, or every 6 months whichever comes first.

If I had a Fazer I would probably do it just once a year.
