According to Yamaha the oil filter should be changed every other oil change on the Fazer which I plan on doing so besides they are £8.39 from the local rip off shop if I want one right now.
Now I know they aren't expensive from eBay but when you rack up 4K in a matter of three months it seems like a waste of money if it will last 8K.
What do you do and why? |

I aim to do mine every 8k and the oil every 4k, that said I usually forget when I last did it and err on the side of caution so it's possible it's gotten a fresh oil and filter at 3k more than once ____________________ I am a bellend, I am a man of constant sorrow, I am a gummy bear, I am a rock. |

I suppose it depends on whether or not you see anything wrong with pumping fresh clean oil through a dirty filter.
Also, if you don't change the filter every time, you aren't changing all of the oil, as up to 1/2 litre of the old dirty oil will remain in the filter. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

i have to do 2 filters and clean another every 3k miles, (but do them every 2k miles)
so i wouldnt be complaining about doing 1 every 4000.
i order my filters in bulk, so i always have filters to hand and get them cheaper from an online shop rather than from a real life store,
just be more prepared, for all the extra effort and cost, id do it every time,
you still have to remove your old filter anyway to get the old oil out,
so why not just replace it ____________________ the humans are dead

its obvious that the more clogged up a filter is the better it filters I'd recommend not changing it ever ____________________ Beer, It's the reason I get up every afternoon

I did 6,400 miles without the oil filter on the GPz I had. The previous owner said he did the oil and filter change, so I didn't touch it. After 3,200 I changed the oil, the manual said the filter could do 2 oil changes, so I didn't check. When I drained the oil, it was clean, no metal bits, so I guess an old 80's air cooled engine can run with no oil filter.
I was young, inexperienced and couldn't find an oil filter. Now the local shops are full of those parts and I kind of regret selling my motorcycle only because I couldn't find spare parts. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

it must be sludge by then, i wouldnt even do that to a car i didnt like let alone a bike that i do,
hang your heads in shame |
Motul 7100 is good stuff. Both bikes are expecting mineral or a low quality branded semi synthetic, any 125 will turn it black in 100 miles.. Car services are now upto silly interval like 16-20k fair enough with decent oil, but I think a lot of people expect that while putting shit in, without derating the interval. Saabs had a massive issue with sludge because of it
| Robbeh wrote: | I'm guessing the darker the oil the longer its been since changed last? |
Colour depends on carbon and other contaminants, so yes, it will get darker, but is also a sign of how well an engine is running - how much combustion gas gets past the rings, and the contaminants use up all the additives, make it sludge/acidic. CBR6 is a lot better than anything else I owned in terms of oil colour.. that includes 5 cars. |
