The MT-25 has got the exact same engine as their YZF-R25 (249ccm, liquid cooled paraler twin cylinder engine, with 8 valve head, 6 speed gearbox, 36hp @ 12,000rpm and 22.6Nm of torque @ 10,000rpm). The MT-25 has got 165 kg which is 1 kg less, than the YZF-R25.

The MT-25 is aimed for the Asian market only. We, Europeans, will get MT-03 which is exactly the same motorcycle, with a bit bigger engine. They talk about direct competition to the Kawasaki's Z300, so I assume the motorcycle will be A2 friendly.

The expected launch date of the MT-03 in Europe is this autumn.

In Indonesia apparently it will sell for £2250, so it's built down to a price... wonder how much that price will fatten up by the time it gets here.

Also wonder will they actually call it MT-03? MT-03 already exists.

Somewhat interesting despite weighing 170kg. Hope it has better economy than Kawasaki's latest efforts though, both the 250 singles and 300 twins managing around 67MPG which is, of course, similar economy to a small car or Honda's NC700/CB500. Which is stupid.

F650GS. Brick Wall

It's lardy and I'd want to know the service intervals and schedule.

It's interesting that it's 36bhp and also 170kg. Frame looks wimpy/cheap too.

Yamaha's XS400 was also 36bhp back in the 70's and I think it weighed under 160kg? In fact give me a late monocross XS400 in blue with the funky LC style spoked wheels, and you can keep your MT25/30!

If 400cc of DOHC 8v twin variety could do 36bhp then, and air cooled as well for better sound, then today's effort is really rather poor.

If you forced me to buy a new small bike, Honda's CBR300 is tempting me much more than Yamaha's effort TBH!

ZZR-250 was over 40hp and 160kg wet. I'm sure someone can find better.

VT250 Spada was 40HP and 153kg wet in 1989. Some CBR400RRs were 45HP and 157kg.

Of course the fun thing is that back in '65 the CB450 was 43HP, 183kg (okay not so good) and did a solid 70MPG. Humph!

I forgot about the GPZ250R of 1985, 43bhp at 13000 and 138kg dry. That sounds like a very fit 250 for one that's not supposed to blow out smelly blue clouds that is.

Ninja 300 get some nuts! Laughing

[rant]Is it just me or does the MT-25 just look really cheap and halfhearted? Can't stand the frame myself. Maybe it'll look better in real life, but the R25 wasn't that impressive either. Just nothing to set it apart or a defining feature for the eye to rest on.

And that's just on the aesthetics side of things. I'm practically rolling my eyes every time someone or some advert tries to big-up modern 250cc performance with a straight face when anyone in the know will be aware of all the rip-roaring older 250s with more power and MPG and other qualities that are sought by riders who care more than merely owning a gutless commuter in a big fancy fairing Mad Mad Mad [/rant]

I agree, it looks chintzy. Even the Mt125 has USD forks and a better looking frame. Probably why it costs twice as much.

I reckon they're going to have to improve the build of that before they shift any of those in the UK.

Or just stick the 320cc lump into an Mt-125 and sell that instead.

Yeah, that's another thing that really bugged me about it. After seeing the MT125 with its looks and features, I'm really surprised Yamaha didn't go for the same 'premium' feel with the MT-25.

The MT125 and YZF-R125 vie for "best bike you can have on an A1".

The MT-25/"03" won't be the best bikes you can have on an A2.

To the end of 2014, sales are:

CB500F/X/CBR500R 2633 (all variants)
CRF250 ~1500 units (all variants)
Inazuma 250 ~700
Ninja 300 450
Duke 390 390 (sic)
CBR300R 48

35kW sells, even in a bloaty package.

It's built for Asian Tax brackets and licencing rules which jump at 250cc plus. It's also the biggest market for motorcycles, most of which are 150cc. It's build as a premium product in a market where 150cc is the norm.

It doesn't seem to deliver anything that a CB500 variant doesn't under the euro tax/licencing system

Well, it's a fair bit lighter - without actually being light.
