3 day 750 mile trip planned around the UK imminently. I came across a good deal on a 1 piece, but the others in the group are saying I should get textile clothing instead. The weather is forecast no rain, and temps of 19-23c, so not crazy hot. Am I likely to be uncomfortable in this, or are they just being ott?

Can you peel down a 1 piece to waist level if you stop (say for lunch)?

I'm coming back from touring France and Spain in two piece leathers, considerably hotter than that.

You can unpeel leathers and tie them around your waist but it won't be particularly comfy, especially sitting. Ok for short stops. Two piece is definitely more comfy.

Stay hydrated if the temps get higher. You will sweat a lot.

Textile clothing can get way too hot and sweaty for summer touring. There are better options:

2 piece leathers so you can take the jacket off when walking around or stopped for lunch.
Kevlar jeans and a jacket, same as above but more comfy and cooler.

Both options would need a rain suit @ about £40 just in case it does rain.

10 of us from here are off to Europe next week and temperatures in France/Italy/Austria are set for 30+ degrees. The general consensus is to go with Kevlar jeans and a jacket with a rain suit just in case.

I did a 8 day tour of Scotland in May when it was raining in one piece leathers with a waterproof oversuit. It wasn't too bad, bit cold at times but the temperature you're looking for I'd just wear your one piece if it's all you've got. You can tie it around your waist if you really wanted but I didn't mind.

Go naked Thumbs Up

On a more sensible note : I think you will be fine as long as it does`nt rain hard.
It`s only three days.

have both 1 + 2pc..
neither is a problem and I find the 1pc cooler than the 2pc... as there is no waistband and air can circulate ..
see if the 1pc is perforated with air holes; as mine are; as this makes all the difference..
I wear a large textile jacket over the top for when it rains or cools off....
what leathers have you been looking at ?

One-piece leathers are fine until you need a 'dump' in a rush, gettin' them down and back up again when you're sweating can be a right bastard. The other problem with them is that the zip rarely goes down low enough to get your todger safely out unless of course you're a porno star that'd put a horse to shame.

In my experience decent Textile Clothing is by far the best for all weather conditions. My textile suit is predominantly white and has multiple vents. Have used it day after day in temperatures 40c plus. Black clothing (and helmets) are bad news in hot sunny weather. Good quality leathers are great for falling off with, Good quality textiles are good for everything else.

I do have leathers but wouldn't dream of touring with them. Done that and learned the lessons. Never tried Kevlar jeans so can't comment.

I went the other way. I have a goretex proshell suit (1000+ GBP RRP) that I tour with when it's not summer or I'm touring somewhere in Britain, and I have a touring suit (~600 GBP RRP) with removable waterproofing and loads of vents that I've gone to the south of Spain with in the past. I mostly use the jacket for commuting if it's hot (high probability of 30+ on the forecast) otherwise my goretex jacket is fine.

But these days, if the temperature is going to be in the range 20 to 35 degrees, and there's little chance of rain, I stick with leather. I've just come back from south of France / northern Spain, and the only time I was sorry I was in leathers is 39 degrees in Paris traffic last Friday, where I couldn't go fast enough to let my sweat evaporate.

Mostly it's because leathers are so much nicer to ride in. There's much less between you and the bike, and the environment. No bulk. The layer of dead flies is easier to wipe off. And of course there's the potential for crashes: I ride sportiest when I'm touring, because that's when I'm riding on the best roads (they're certainly not in this country).

Leathers effectively form a whole-body tunnel if you open the zip a little when you're on a motorway, even more so if you stand on the pegs. My leathers are ventilated at the armpits and groin. I didn't get too hot as long as I was moving.

Extended city riding is not a good idea though.

For me, the increased connection with the bike and the environment I get from leathers is better than the mildly increased comfort from textiles. I have a reasonably high observed tolerance for heat though - I'm the guy complaining about too much aircon in the office.

I've not noticed any excess heat from wearing a black helmet either. The nature of the protection means there's almost no conduction of heat. If the helmet has ventilation worth a damn, then convection won't matter either. Though for practical purposes I'd rather wear a smushed-fly coloured helmet.

For anything other than track or quick one day blast I would choose textiles every time - they are lighter, comfier, waterproof.
