Back then years ago they used to make hammerite oil based. Wire brush on metal, bit of sanding and slap hammerite on it worked.

Today hammerite is water based and it isn't a patch on the old stuff due to EU meddling. So are they any alternatives?

Rustoleum has always been as good if not better than hammerite and I am fairly sure the Combi Colour range is oil based.

The Hammerite we sell isn't water based...which product were you looking at?
(having said that, it did get 'meddled with' some years ago and isn't as good as used to be...it's still solvent based though)

With the Hammerite I've bought recently the brushes cleaned easily with white spirit!
Make of that what you will!

Used this on wheel arches on cars and is mega effective. If it gets on your fingers it don't come off until your skin comes off....
